Good post. Obama appealed to people who think they are leftists based on a very limited world view. Your comment on both sides wanting a nanny state is spot on, too.

Take a sample from left, middle of the road (if you can find any) and right, then decide for yourself wherein lies the truth.

Vice and NPR do amazing work to get the truth. A lot of people feel they lean Liberal but that's just because human decency is considered too "liberal" by racists aka conservatives
The BBC by a mile
I'm pleased to see Bloomberg up toward the top (and middle). They do a good job of "just the facts."
Daily Show. Also, it's more fun to watch.
MSNBC plays it straight up ,

That media bias fact check web site is extremely media biased.

there's nothing close to an unbiased source. you have to figure things out for yourself.

Ah yes, 2016’s jokes have become 2019’s reality
Independent journalists...a long list. Tim Pool (Timcast) is my favorite.
All the mainstream "news" sources (NYT, Wapo, MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, BBC etc) have slowly degraded over the years. They are multinational corporations (largely foreign owned) with corporate agendas that have nothing to do with fair reporting of news. Now...they mostly present opinions masquerading as facts...activism masquerading as journalism. Part of the problem is that they are dying. Independent journalists are destroying them. Consequently, they rush out the "news" with the only objective being to garner views/clicks...and no regard to truth. Trump's election accelerated their demise.
@realDonaldTrump.
The best is Donald Trump himself, followed closely by Breitbart. I've pretty much never seen them say something wrong.

The most important part of that graph isn't the left/right part. It is the vertical access. Below a certain level you are just getting noise with no info. Trying to blend the Daily Kos and Fox News and trying to figure out what is going on will get you no where since you have to guess what they are saying is even happening. Do the same thing with the Washington Post and the Wall street journal and you get actual facts presented in different ways. You can actually get somewhere with that.
It is important to realize what unbiased news is. Take a statement like "Congress passed a tax cut that the heritage foundation expects to increase GDP by 4% and will cut the deficit in half". That is an unbiased statement of fact. But to understand that statement, you need to know that the heritage foundation is a conservative group that thinks that tax cuts increase economic activity and reduce the deficit. You also have to know that they have been making that predication for the past 40 years and haven't been right yet. With that info you can then weight how much to believe the info. The left has some similiar delusions. The idea that spending more on education helps for example.:)
Now that's a really good question
