Why do so many people want to run on below average teams in a P5 conference? You'd need to run much faster - like well under 9:00 to get any where near a full ride from a top XC program. There are around 65 P5 schools and the number of them with top XC programs is around 12 or so. Many of the very best programs are not in P5 conferences. Why all the excitement about P5 schools? Is it the top of the line tail gating experience?

At the end of my junior year, my parents signed me up for some mailer company called college bound student athlete or similar. It was like $1000 (in the year 2000) but sent out a 1-page bio- and resume of my athletic and sporting highlights to hundreds of schools. The fall of my senior year I got about 15-20 calls a week rom different schools and ended up running in a D-1 school. The calls were actually kind of distracting during XC season, but helped get my name out there and learn how to talk to coaches and figure out which schools had my major. It also widen my horizons and took me across the country for school. amazing service for not much money.
I was a 16:09 5k, 49.8 400m, 1:56.5 800m, 4:29 1600m runner. I was only running 25-30 miles per week, so schools probably saw tons of potential in me (ended up running 4:06 and 1:51 but never broke 15:00) I was also a 4.0 guy
you are a super good runner, you should be getting action if you have decent grades and don't run 75 miles per week...

It seems to me that this point hasn't been stressed enough. If you fill their form out or use a service such as mentioned a couple posts earlier, then maybe 'Why haven't they contacted me?' is a meaningful question. If you have NOT made any contact either through a school's website or indirectly using some agency or somehow getting them your info then they will never contact you. As of right now they do not know you exist and even if they somehow discovered you and are drooling over the prospect of even meeting you they have no email address nor phone number. My HS PRs were faster than any of you but were not the same events that are popular among the crowd on here (I ran a lot of 10ks but have never entered a 3200). Nevertheless, no school had ever heard of me (not fast enough to be on TV nor the cover of RW, as that would have required being competitive with Virgin and Salazar). If there was a coach out there scouring road race results for 15 and 16 yos, which there of course wasn't, they could have found me but would have had no way to make contact. This was no sweat, as I had no interest in running NCAA and made no attempt to do so. In your case, it IS a problem. Give them your number!
Many distance guys like track more than XC and the Power 5 schools dominate track and field. Tell your coworkers that you ran for NAU and see how impressed they are.

Their standards are NOT on their page. I just looked and the recruits section is only for the questionnaire.

The money is out there, you just have find a way to get to it.
I will start off by saying that, it depends if you want to go to an in-state college or out of state college.
For in-state college, I would try and contact the runners on the schools that I would like to run for, then get in contact with their coaches, and hopefully, you will get offered something!
For out of state college, I would try doing the same thing but I will try asking for some help from your coaches and any friends who might have info about good out of state colleges.
OK. So it's all about looking cool to other people that really don't even care about XC or track. Typical kids then.

I think they'll start to find me. Look, I'm not trying to be too all-about me. Last night though I laid down a 4:16 split so am feeling that I'm on for some big things and I'm not talking the massive braha but rather some fat times. If I go sub 410 INDOOR and sub 915 INDOOR, then sorry to say but yeah, I expect some coaches to find me. I don't think that's too conceited. They have milesplit, dyestat and other sites to use. If they want me they can find me. It's not all about the scholly but it IS important to me to feel as though they want me so they can take the first step.
Good luck with that. Coaches don’t care that much and you need to worry about your own future. If there is a school that you are interested in, you need to let the coaches know or you will only hear from the ones within an hour two of your house.

Yes, you're obnoxious. Go ahead and wait for everybody to get excited about a kid who is so entitled that he thinks he should just wait for others to "take the first step". While you're waiting, those other kids, who are also just as fast or faster, are reaching out to schools and feel like people want them because they got a response to their email. They'll also get your money that you think you deserve because they appreciate what's done for them rather than expect it. Nobody wants to coach, or have on their team, somebody who is so self-absorbed. Enjoy your waiting.
My experience with my daughter:
My daughter with strong HS times had received very random letters of interest after some races at the Armory and Van Cortlandt but none really from the schools she was interested in. July 1 of her Junior year, she sent UPS envelopes to ten coaches, each with a cover letter; athletic resume and academic resume . She heard back from all ten coaches, most responded quickly.
That same month we visited 4 coaches and I told my daughter to ask two main questions of the coaches: "Am I the type of runner you are looking for and will I get accepted here." In all cases the coaches confirmed both and each generally walked her through the process of applying early admissions to secure a spot. That fall she went on three weekend recruiting visits to three Ivy League schools, she applied early admissions to one school, was accepted, attended and had a great time.
My daughter had a great HS career and ran well in college but I am pretty sure none of these schools would have reached out to her had she not initiated the conversations.
I work at an NAIA school. Our coaches recruit 10-15 guys with times similar to yours every year. Any of them would be our #1 prize recruit. They express interest in us and even talk about a campus visit. Then, after their junior year, the first week of July rolls around, and they receive communications from 20 DII and 20 DI schools, and we never hear from them again. It has been that way forever. Keep training, and if there are 5-10 schools you really like, contact them because you never know who the 20 DIs will be. The only schools that show interest might be LA- Monroe, Lamar, Vermont, South Dakota and other places you probably have little to no interest in, so be proactive and lower your XC time down to 15:18 next Fall and you'll be fine.
