Arkansas gets a lot of funds from Walmart. A LOT. You don't stay at the Ritz Carlton when going to no-name meets when you aren't loaded. And good for them! They are the state's main team as I understand. If they have the money they may as well use it. If we can get more kids running on scholarships, even if they are shady, so tf what! Basketball and football do it all the time. Why shouldn't us runners get the special treatment too?
As for Wetmore, yeah it's about the athletes and that sounds nice, but ultimately he doesn't like attention. I'm nowhere close to his level, but the thing I hate the most about winning state is that I have to get up on the podium with the kids and smile for what feels like an hour. It's the absolute worst part of winning. He strikes me as someone who would feel the exact same way and doesn't want to be anywhere near a podium. Some people do not like that sort of attention.

Ugh like I know! When I won state I was all like "god not this again" and groaned my way through the award ceremony. It's so rough. Winning state that is...did I mention that I won state?

Wetmore is the GOAT. He is able to do this over decades where he didn't simply use the same set of runners to get multiple championships. He's also one of the few coaches left who makes half an effort to focus on domestic recruitment.

Sure it's a bit of the wild west and if I was a coach I'd tell my runners to tread carefully if they visit site but it's also a haven for current and past competitive runners. Those runners have kids who run, most won't pan out but of the ones that do, it's a great opportunity for a coach to build a brand that appeals to a fringe part of the running community, a fast, competitive fringe that likely would house, fast competitive recruits.
So smirk away, as long as he remembers that it's LetsRun that put him where he is now and they can put him back down too.

This is not true. Wetmore does not need this board. No one does. I know of at least 3 pro coaches that won’t ever do an interview with letsrun.
I believe Dani Jones and Joe Klecker said in post race interviews that Wetmore yelled something to them during the race about how the team was doing. Jones heard Wetmore call out "The team looks good!" Jones said the team title was 100% more important than the individual title. Also I believe Klecker said he did not want to fade because of the team.
So CU XC runners and Wetmore do care about the team, and they both use the overall team score as motivation.
You can run selfishly and try to place as high as possible as an individual, and by doing so still care about the team.

1. I can't stand interviewees who aggressively act like their interviewer is stupid and the questions are beneath them. Wetmore here, Popovich, etc. Grow up, guys. The interviews are part and parcel of the "universe" you inhabit, the same universe that allows you to make a nice living coaching a game. Show some maturity and basic respect for the interviewer just trying to do their job. Blech.
2. Hate for Letsrun by "elite" college and pro athlete and coaches--who are they kidding? THIS IS ALL THERE IS.
Who else cares? Their failing local newspaper? Their parents? American joggers?--the average "mass running" participant at her charity half has NO CLUE who Mark Wetmore is.
When I was a decent college runner over a dozen years ago, the ONLY place my team and I got any publicity apart from our college paper was Letsrun. Hell, you can win a national XC championship, and you MIGHT get a spot in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" section.
The hard truth in the tiny world of competitive running is that everyone knows LRC is where the "action" of people who actually care and are knowledgeable about the sport reside online, but because of the anonymous, often sophomoric nature of the message boards, no one wants to admit it.
Anytime an article in the NY Times mentions "message board chatter" , they're talking about LRC.
If a Sports Illustrated writer wants to learn the scoop--he comes to LRC.
If an article in Outside magazine mentions "online rumors", they're talking about LRC.
LRC has earned the ire of certain players because they've gone after big institutions in our sport--doping, Nike, USATF, etc.
You may not like the two trust fund bros and their terrible spelling, but trust funders can do MUCH worse than start and maintain (for decades now) the only running website on the internet that meaningfully covers the competitive side of the sport. NO ONE ELSE CARES.

I'm sure if Wetmore hangs out in Boulder another 10 years, with just a little effort in recruiting he will get another XC championship before 2028. I think I could do the same if I were in his shoes!!
If my son or daughter were close to their senior year yet , I'd be telling them to take a good long look at other coaches who have done more with a lot less. IMHO, Wetmore is way over-rated.
