Basically the Gregg Popovich of collegiate distance running...kudos to JG for squeezing a few nuggets out of him.
Great coach and cooler than the other side of the pillow.
Wetmore shut JG down, repeats what has been stated 1,000x beforehand, simple formula, but idiot JG tries to get the inside scoop... there is none.
Classic Wetmore interview. All he does is write the workouts, throw some poetry in there and lets the runners be themselves. Other coaches could learn from him.
Methinks Wetmore ain't much of a fan of the LRC.
Appreciate him being so direct with his responses. He's about as straight a shooter as you're gonna get, which can make for a very tough interview if you aren't ready. Considering that I'd say Gault did alright.

I've listened to him talk to his runners one on one at a spring track meet. He encourages and gives support to every runner no matter how their race went. If I was college age runner, there is no one I'd rather run for.
I thought it was a good interview, thanks letsrun.
Interviewer: Can you elaborate?
Wetmore: Yes!
"We don't teach team cross country. I ask them to be selfish."
Now that's a guy that understands XC.
Seems like Wetmore is old now,...I've lost touch with the 'rado program.

Meanwhile, the NAU coach is all about emphasizing the team. More than one way to win a championship.
Especially if you go overseas to recruit.
Haha this was easily the toughest interview I had all week. I came out of it thinking, "Man I panicked, that was awful," but listening to it back I think I did okay. When I interview Mark on the phone it's fine because I've got all my questions written down beforehand. And when I interview other coaches, I usually have time to formulate my next question in the back of my mind while they're answering the current one. But with Mark it's bam-bam-bam-bam. He keeps you on your toes.
The crazy thing is that it was happening WHILE THE COLORADO WOMEN WERE GETTING THE TROPHY. I actually asked him at the very start if he was sure he didn't want to be up there watching/celebrating with them and he said he didn't.

Please don't do that. It's one of the most annoying British/Commonwealth-isms out there.
Please say -- "replaying it". or "listening to it again". Like a normal, non-grating human being.

All things considered you did great. Most people getting interviewed sort of play into the questions being asked. It’s a natural way of having conversation. Wetmore is old enough to not give two Fs about conventional rules and that’s part of what makes him so likeable.
I've known Mark Wetmore since 1980, and I think he'd have given the same type of responses back then as he did yesterday.
Jon,
I disagree.
You sounding like you were were stumbling along the whole interview.
No planning or forethought.
The fact that you post over the top of it giving yourself credit is pretty pathetic.
Have a conversation with the man, or ask questions...
This was a 2/10 interview.
No, Jonathan, that was a solid interview with those answers, because you showed your knowledge and got a fun interview out of it.
