davidw,
In spite of the occasional lone voice of reason, this board is almost certainly at least 99% American. Still, how tough can it be for people to understand kilometres when virtually all race distances are metric?
Anyway, this allows me to segue into an irrelevant discussion of metric vs imperial distances. We went metric here in Canada back in the mid-70s, so much of my education was based on the metric system. Still, I think in miles for my running. I even convert 5k and 10k races into miles when I write them in my log book. (Even more irrelevant, I also think in pounds, feet and inches, but measure car distances by kilometres).
Some older guys I've run or bullshitted with think in kilometers. This is baffling to me, as these guys grew up with imperial measurement. Their justification to me (independent input from a couple of 50'ish guys) was that the races are measured that way, so they might as well think that way.
Anyway, I credit my confusion to our former tortured genius Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
OK, I'll go get a coffee now.
