I got splits from the old SI article, which I linked.
If the splits are 440y splits, then how do you know that his 2:46 split was for 1200m? Wouldn't it stand to reason that it was a 1320y split, that is, from finish line on the first lap to the finish line at the end?
Same training, nutrition, equipment, track, etc, I'd take prime Ryun over the best of any of the Ingebritsen clan.
And I don't recall Ryun acting like a buffoon after any of his races, win or lose.
Those were better times and better behavior, I reckon.
SI splits put him at 3/4 (or 1200m) at 2:56, not 2:55. That's the source of the 37.1. Probably the 37.1 is actually for the last 293m to the finish, which makes it 38 for 300m. I assume that the next 210 yards in 24.6 was actually a typo for the next 220y. Who sets a 210 yard split? For him to go 220 in 24.6 is possible. After all, he was hammering and showed at Dusseldorf that he could run that pace or slightly faster for the final 300m on dirt (the kick does not look much slower than Dusseldorf's), where the track was metric. Or maybe it was a 210 yard split to the mark that is 220y from the 110y mark because the race had a 1500m start. As for the heat, I didn't go with the claim of 100 degrees because I saw much lower temps on the historical weather report, but at any rate, they might have had a thermometer in the sun trackside that was the source. He did have pacing for a long way. There has to be a film out there of the whole race--the clips come from somewhere. We have to see the full races for both Dusseldorf and LA. Anyway, back to work.

I don’t doubt that you’ve seen a split given that suggests a 37 last 200m, but I’d bet my life that it was 39sec and something. I would put more weight on the accuracy of the splits given by Cordner Nelson in T&FN than Sports Illustrated. The IAAF official World Record Progression book also gives 39 and bits and that gives 100m splits for Ryun for the entire race based on video scrutiny!? I’m away from home at moment so can’t remember which source has which time, but one has 39.1, the other 39.3, and for last 400m they have 53.3 and 53.6.
I’d love to know whether it was a 400m or 440yd track and exactly where the marks were where they took all those strange (e.g 210yds!?) splits from?
Also footage of the entire race would be good.
