Joan Benoit had a baby and won the gold in a space of 8 or nine months? Never heard that one. I don't even think she had her first child for a few years after she won.
Favourite runner? Tom Longboat.
Pat Porter! No bullshit and tough as balls!
Absolutely, positively, Haile Gebrselassie.
I would have to say Ibraham Hussein, he was/is a class act and had a speed range that gets overlooked and I just don't think they come any tougher mentally and physically.
Prefontaine...and 2nd is Suzy Favor Hamilton.
Mark Belger, ever since I saw him run at Penn when I was in HS.
Oops. I hadn't seen that someone had mentioned Joan Benoit already. You are right, of course, that she had her children after winning the gold. But she did win the gold with 4 or 5 months of having knee surgery. In fact, weren't the Olympic trials within about 3 weeks of her surgery?
Miruts Yifter, once descibed in a ( non running ) magazine as a waterbug skimming across the track. An old bastard who could really kick.
