The Monday Big Discussion: After 31:55 10k Win in Stanford, how do you assess Gwen Jorgensen's Olympic chances?

Do you guys believe that her not wearing spikes might have impacted her time a bit more? If so, then her run that night is even more impressive.

schweizer was focused on the 3k and 5k only a few weeks ago for indoor (and won them). I'm surprised so many people are shocked she got beaten in an early season away meet in the 10k? who cares

most college runners feel the 10k is a long race...

Is she bigger than Paula?

I really think Gwen Jorgensen and Chris Solinsky are brother and sister. Both are from Wisconsin and ran there at the same time. They are the same size proportionately for women and men.

She needs to follow his lead and focus on 5k and 10k where she can be world class for the next few years.

I had a teammate who was 5'10" sub 16 for 5,000 and weighed 116. I suppose that is big as far as the stats go but Paula has the WR and she is 5'8".

She has a chance as does Mika Tan and Dana Vespoli.

Honestly, I think her chances of making the team are pretty good. Like previous posters have said, the marathon is a wildly unpredictable event where favourites often underperform or DNF, and Gwen is a gamer, proving herself over the triathlon discipline. I think she will be able to step up when it counts in 2020. Like the rest of you, I think it's pretty outlandish that she wins gold or medals, but I certainly think she will be able to make the Olympic team, and finish in the top 10.

Gwen is obviously a winner and has already accomplished quite a bit. I find it humorous discussing her height as if that dooms her future. Bunch of mental mastrabation in my view.

I think she could do it if she moved to Kenya and trained like the Robertsons.

Otherwise, the triathlon is a country club sport and access to wealth and resources are as much of a determining factor as talent and hard work. It has much higher barrier to entry compared to distance running. If she said that she would try to win gold in the modern pentathlon or some other country club sport, I would be less skeptical.

While I do not doubt her belief, work ethic, drive, all those controllable factors, I am not convinced she has the genetic ability to beat the very best with many more years of experience and more natural ability that will show up at the starting line for the marathon trials and the Olympic marathon. Competing in a country club sport is a totally different ball game than the much more competitive and lower barrier of entry of long distance running.

I give a 1% chance of Olympic gold because there always is a chance. I will be interested to see what happens when she enters a competitive half marathon or marathon race.

Schweizer did not put together a 10k on par with her indoor prowess.

Maybe she will at Cardinal or in the future but for now she is a superior 5,000 runner.

I don’t think the sub 32 is that meaningful in the race that she ran. If she lost and ran over 32 then yes.. it wouldn’t bode well for her marathon aspirations.

If her competitors are running 32 pace in the race and then you edge them out for a win then it means you can run that pace. It doesn’t mean you can’t run faster. If she had tried to run a faster pace on her own and failed to go under 31:40 then that would be more meaningful.

Her recent PB in the paced 5k is faster than Hasay’s 5k. She hasn’t had as many cracks at the 5k as Hasay. So it should mean something.

Whenever she tackles the half, we’ll have a better indication of where she’s at.

I think she’ll show dramatic improvements over the next two years. She’s motivated as anyone can be and she has a great team beside her. If you consider the 15:15 & 31:55 as steps in her early running development, I think she’s not that far from Hasay & Sisson (her main rivals in 2020) given that they both have had many more attempts at achieving their times but as I said above, we won’t really know until, she runs a few more races especially at the longer distances.

I agree with everyone who said the pregnancy is not a detriment to her running fast. I am nowhere near as fast but have PRd after every one of my kids including a 17:55 (35 second PR) when my fourth kid was 7 months.
