I personally don't think a DQ is the right penalty. I think there should be a penalty where you put Muir 2nd and Hassan 3rd but I'm sorry - you can't do what Hassan just did.
Her coach would have filed a protest. If they did it was not accepted. The tape shows no clear physical contact. Officials are there on the track, plenty of angles to look at the finish on tape.
Its really a non issue.

I wanted Muir to get past more than most of the Americans here, but I don't think Hassan did anything wrong.
She always runs with her elbows out, people that have seen her run knows she does that even when running solo out in front. It's just her arm swing.
And as for the gliding out of lane 1 into lane 2, I personally don't think that's illegal and if it is it definitely shouldn't be.
The runner in front has worked hard to gain an advantage position, it's madness to say they have to run in a dead straight line for the finish and must no deviate. Does everyone realise that running at a diagonal also increases the distance the athlete in front is running? So if they are tying up it's a risk to run further.
I personally think it's a completely fine tactical move no worse than a bit of barging in the middle of the race.
If you've decided to leave your kick until the last 50m of the race to pass me after using me as a windshield/pacemaker for 1450m then you better prepare to run in lane 6

looked like completely normal tactics by hassan. that one photo at the end looks bad, but thats all it looks that way. hassan didn't touch and didn't reach out and block like huddle did.

Yep and Muir isn't impeded or obstructed. She has 4 empty lanes to her right and it's her choice to run in them or run through Hassan.
The rules do not state that every athlete should be allowed to run exactly where they want on the track when they want, otherwise inside lane runners would have to move out to allow a faster finishing athlete to pass them on the inside.
Swerving across the lanes to lane 1 to block someone trying to overtake you on the inside would count as lane diversion in order to impede the progress of another athlete, because they have nowhere else to go. Muir could go wherever she wanted.
Clearly Muir was going to move past Hassan before reaching the finish line.
Needs to be negative consequence for that kind of tactic.

The norms of the sport - especially when you were competing - may have been that this move was acceptable and there is no clearly no consensus about the rules here as the British team did not lodge a protest.

Hassan said she didn't realize she veered out and Muir said she did not realize it either...this should pretty much end this thread. The high insight of replay and slow motion can sometimes give an impression that's different from what the athletes' experience in real-time. Btw, I went back and watched a couple of Hassan races and she has veered out before even when there was no one behind her. Veering out actually happens quite a bit when you become completely lactic approaching the finish line. In fact, most athletes who are tieing up, veer to the right as they approach the finish line, which sometimes opens up the inside lane to pass. With that said, Hassan is a bit of an erratic racer, with a long back kick and sharp elbows; I would try to stay away from when competing.

Impeding someone's progress is not normal tactics. If you need a stride and a half clearance to cut inside, you should also need stride and a half clearance to cut outside.
An athlete shouldn't have to file a protest. Officials should automatically review in sketchy circumstances irregardless of what the injured party wants. The athletes should have no part in the process. Refs make calls in basketball all the time, without input from players.
