Yes these claims have been made before (not just by Kimetto) but they might prove truthful at some point ;-) As for marathoners making a comeback, dunno, no one comes to mind.

Kipsang made claims before the 2016 Berlin Marathon that he was in WR shape and I remember thinking "yeah right, he's 34 and bombed his last 3 marathons". Then sure enough he goes out and runs a PR of 2:03:13. Of course he was greatly overlooked because of Bekele's win. So it's not impossible that for Kimetto to get back in the game, but it's certainly not looking good for him.

Yes Kipsang would be the closest to a "comeback" but then he never really faded away completely like G.Mutai, Kimetto...or Kebede, or Macau, etc...

I think psychologically wore out would be a better approach.

He is the world record holder, what comes up must come down?

I've said it here before, Wilson Kipsang and Dennis Kimetto are completely different kinds of individuals. No shade but Kipsang and Kipchoge are similar in the sense that they are smart, voracious readers and thinkers who strategise long-term and deploy the mental in tandem with the physical. Kimetto, on the other hand, is more of a raw talent who just ran as fast as he could.

Agreed. Why do we assume that someone who ran 2:02 should just continue to keep pumping those out? Kipchoge is not the norm, the marathon is hard. Running fast marathons is harder. You can't do it for ever.

This- and that is why I like 1/2 marathons better. For one- the top runners can run more of them in a year and be in the public eye more often. Their careers can last longer- this can make the top runners more popular and bring recognition to the sport.

True but so far the "raw talent" gets the last laugh. Who knows, maybe neither Kipchogue, Kipsang or Bekele will ever break his record even though they got close...
