and im starting to think that rotterdam must be like dubai, as it seems most people that run super fast PRs yet run 2:08-10 everywhere else run PR's at those two places. and the other thing to look at, when did kenya start cracking down on EPO? pretty sure you will see a correlation with slower times.

i will tell you all a 2:08-10 guy will be a 2:06 on EPO, and drop a 2:04-5 at dubai, and a 2:06 guy will run 2:03s on EPO.

so rupp being clean is a 2:08-10 guy, back when he was on the magic sauce yes he could have run a 2:06, and prob a 2:04 at dubai. but those days are over and now he is going as clean as he can cause of all the heat salazar and NOP have been in.

I really need to stop responding to trolls, but I just can't help myself. All three of Rupp's marathons have been run in hot weather and he's done great in all of them. I agree that someone could go 2:06 if the pace is honest, but Rupp will not be over 3 minutes behind if that happens. Other than Kipchoge, the greatest marathoner ever, no one else has significantly gapped Rupp in a marathon. And Kipchoge was only 1:20 ahead of Rupp at the Olympics. I don't think Rupp will win, but no way anyone in this field will beat him by over 3 minutes.

As for your last comment, 2015 was won in 2:09 and last year was won in 2:11. And 2015 wasn't exactly a bad field either, Chumba and Kitwara were coming off 2:04 performances the year before.

and stop saying that rupp only got gapped by 1:20, kipchoge was on chill mode till the last 6 miles, and easily pulled away. you are reading way to much into this as if kipchope was pushing WR effort and rupp was only 1:20 behind. rupp was maxed out to the bone and kipchoge pushed then cruised to an EASY victory.

always an excuse about 'it was hot", "it was tactical" blah blah blah. the winner should go 2:06 mid, with rupp 5-6th place.

But in your first post you were talking about how much more impressive a 2:04 at Dubai is than anything Rupp has run so far. And yet Rupp beat 2:04 Dubai guys at both the Olympics and Boston.

Whatever, based on your most recent post we seem to agree that a lot of 2:04/2:05 guys only have those PRs because they were run in perfect conditions on fast courses. A time that Rupp maybe could have run in similar conditions. Ryan Hall ran 2:06 in London off a positive split, no reason to think Rupp couldn't have done the same or better.

Anyway, the reason I'm going to such great lengths to defend Rupp is that I'm sick of hearing that Americans are such pussies at the marathon. The reason why Rupp and other top Americans don't have great PRs is that they generally don't run the fast European/Asain courses. Again, Hall ran 2:06 in London but ran 2:08-2:10 on the American courses. And Hall rarely even finished on the podium. So I'd like to see a little more respect for Rupp when he's out there stomping on 2:04/2:05 guys and placing in the top 3.

Not the best behind Kipchoge, but I don't feel out of line at all calling Rupp one of the best marathoners in the world right now. Not sure what you're getting at with Rodgers. I think Rodgers would certainly be competitive if he were in his prime today.

But we can certainly agree on your last statement. I'll bump this thread after the race when Rupp gets another podium finish and hopefully a sub 2:09 (assuming an honest opening pace).

I would toss out Feyisa's performance at the GNR, looks like he didn't join the lead pack until well into the 2nd mile and never slowed down. He couldn't go with that late sub-4:30 surge Jake put in. Also, Biwott took some time off because of injury and the Bogota race was his return to racing and that race was very tactical.

People might think these guys are chop liver, but WMM race directors confer with coaches and agents to confirm guys are in shape before giving out an invite. Unless you are a U.S. runner, 2:07 shape is about bar for a WMM invite.

Alan Culpepper ran 2:09:41 at Chicago in 2002. A great race for him. I don't think Rupp will beat that time on Sunday. The weather won't allow it.

Why would you exclude KK??? He moved to the US at age 21 (1992) and married an American at age 25 (1996). He became a citizen at are 28 (May 2000). He was coached by an Americans after he moved to the US. His marathons all came starting in 1997 (Chicago winner). He is entirely a product of American coaching.

I witnessed a couple of Khannouchi's Chicago runs as a spectator and those were scintillating races. The 2002 race in particular was off the charts. At 20M, where I was standing, Takaoka of Japan was absolutely hammering and KK looked done. He recovered and set a WR that day. I have utmost respect for KK. Chicago will always embrace him like it embraced Ernie Banks.

Rupp will never run a marathon like Khannouchi did. Eight guys in that 2002 race went through the half in 1:02:30. We'll never see that again either.

Last year Chicago went out in 1:06:51. The year before it was 1:05:13.

No matter the pace, Rupp will finish 2nd to 5th as always.
