Was Joe Kovacs robbed of world title? Was his last throw really a foul?

there is nothing mentioned about the athlete having the right to demand that a foul be measured & then recourse to higher officials after the meet to see if athlete was correct in his appeal & having throw/jump re-instated

it's still nonsense situation, same as dendy who had what looked a questionable foul of 8.70+ in peking or the King who had a 30' one ruled a foul back in '82 which he vehemently said was no-foul but officials woudn't measure it

you can have a 100 officials at the meet for an event but if they don't measure the throw/jump initially it is still same nonsense as before

You have a valid point but the system has improved since that time. I witnessed this first hand back at the World Indoors in Moscow in the triple jump. The officials started to measured a mark in the sand that Davis was sure was not his. Davis went to the head official of the event and politely requested they measure both marks- which they did. A later review of the VDM confirmed the jump which ended up to be the gold medal jump.

In addition, all championship meets now use what I will call the European model of officiating where there is a Referee assigned to every field events In fact when there are two qualifying groups, there is a Referee for each group. This way there is a "higher authority" who can make a immediate ruling based on their observations.

Officials are human like everyone else and mistakes happen but we are incorporate protocols and technology to get it right. It's all about the athlete!

Kovacs toed the top of the board. Crouser, the big cry baby, stood out and was fouled, yet has protested twice. They both probably have illegal techniques that had gone unpunished for a while until now.

Thank you for this perspective. Was it ever a rule that fouls don't get measured, or was it just a convention? That's standard practice at the amateur events I've been in, but of course there's no TV cameras and therefore no replays.

This may have tarnished it a little, but up until now Walsh and Crouser (and perhaps Kovacs - I can't remember) have seemed to have a good friendly rivalry. The first two at least have been quoted saying very nice things about each other.

neither Kovacs nor especially Crouser should have needed a protest to win this. At least both seemed to accept the result.

Interesting that Walsh is NZ's first male WC. Guess they have had a dry spell since Smell and Walker. Maybe their gene pool has softened.

Watching the replay of the 2017 World Championships (I'm bored, there are no other sports on right now). Kovacs was most definitely robbed. Yes, the replay shows his left toe hitting the board. However, there is no angle that shows it hit the TOP of the board. The only still photos they have shown of this show the toe on the side of the board. They really need, at the professional level, to have sensors on the shot put ring like they do for the blocks of the sprints. Any pressure sensed is a foul and you can't argue. This from Kovacs was a foul? Maybe? Maybe isn't good enough in a World Championships. The fact is, Kovacs threw the farthest and was robbed. Similar infractions went unpunished throughout the competition.
