have you ever run in a race
people chasing you in the olympic finals is so much different than you alone on a track with a watch
idiot

I know I said probably, but still. Your welcome.

This was sarcasm right?

You move up to the 800 when you can't win in the 400.
I don't see him messing with the 800.
And I don't understand this fascination.
He'd break 2 hours in the marathon with a few months of specific training
Don't forget a visit to "Healing Hans"!

He used the 4x400 starting line.
Anyone have the breakdown of the 100m splits of the race? Suspect he slowed far less than Merritt and James.

I hope so but I won't hold my breath.
I reckon he is far cleaner then the Ethiopian women are.
I'm not sure the tracks are that much faster now then in 1999 or 1999?
Any views on this.
it's the same mondo 720 super x that you can find all over the country here.
Tell that to Alberto Juanorena

Time to remeasure that track!
That was my first thought as well. Not drugs, but track measure. Even a tiny bit can be enough. And, for 25 laps, more than enough. Likely it has been checked, but maybe best they check again.

I've been quietly watching the games but I yelled out when I saw that result.
I thought it was under 43.50 and then saw that 0 after the 3. and wow!
He didn't even glance over his shoulder coming out of the last turn.
Dead focus on the finish line.
I am surprised they did that whole preview on him without mentioning that he is the only sub 10, sub 20 sub 44 guy ever.
Speed kills.
Bolt is glad he didn't move up.
I'm one of those idiots who always wished Wariner would have moved up to 800 in his prime due to his speed, ability to finish strong, and slight build. I'm gonna say it with this guy, I think he could run 1:40-1:43
The interesting fact here is that when the slow motion replay came up Van Niekerk looked like a guy that actually could run a good 800m, a nice style/stride to watch.
As an experienced 400m runner, a few comments:
- It seems clear that he has trained for this type of time trial. He perfectly paced the first 300 metres of the race.
- In a 400m time trial in which a runner runs solo, the outside lane is always the best because it has the least curvature. Therefore, if Van Niekerk has really trained well to internally pace himself to a 43.x run, then lane 8 actually was helpful for him.
- Michael Johnson ran 43.18 out of lane 5. I believe that if he had run in lane 8 with precisely the same type of pacing (in other words, avoiding any mental effects from not seeing competitors), his run should be very similar to Van Niekerk's.

just saw a replay, merritt and james laboring in the last 100 van niekirk RUNNING EASY
According to the IAAF, all three guys were ahead of MJ's record pace with 100 to go -- Van Niekerk slowed down the least, if he had matched MJ's HGH/Roid fueled last 100 meters he'd have run 42.5/42.6 or so.
Too bad Merritt got a medal, but the bitter look on his usually cocky face was priceless. He's a piece of cheating garbage.
Looking at the replay, I see 20.3/30.8 for the on screen clock for VN (20.2/31.0 and 20.3/30.9 for KJ/LM, resp), but I know that's not the most accurate, considering the same clock is at 42.8 when he breaks the plane at the finish. Rough guess would be 20.5/31.0 at 200/300 for VN. Would love to see official splits.

They interviewed him for tv down here and man was he p___ed off and stunned at the same time. Funny.
Yes
Van Niekirk is half white so im not surprised he has the genes to be the fastest ever.
You know that was fun. I wish my Grandma was a coach. Great story.
