I've been on a broadcast team.....it shocked me how different the LRC geek wish list is from the reality of TV. There's a tremendous difference between a sport and the broadcasting of that sport.
ESPN knows how to run a sports broadcast. Larry and Dwight are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing as a condition of ESPN distributing this meet, meaning you can watch without a failing stream on a low- rent website.
And IMO, Larry and Dwight are having a good night at the mic.
I come back to the broadcast so I can watch the last mile of the 10k and I hear Larry say that the runners run over the summer. I heard that last night. How is that viewed as great insight?
I also heard they run 50-80 mpw. Don't some women more than that? I hope so.

I think the announcers were not really that bad tonight. They knew quite a bit about (most) of the athletes, and it was great that they showed most of the races. I appreciated it.

i havent caught the entire coverage tonight, but i do get them impression that they are doing better with the women than they did with the men last night. That being said, that is not a terribly high bar to clear, because they were atrocious last night.
I agree. There were some horrible moments but on the whole they did better than yesterday. Unfortunately I think we're going to get a lot of the same stories for the next 2 days and things might start getting a little repetitive. Maybe someone will grow some balls overnight and try to do something in the 5k to beat Ches (outside of hitting him in the kneecap with a lead pipe).

mixing up harvard and arkansas is bad, but mixing up texas and arkansas (like he did in the pre-race) is hilarious.
Also, a pet peeve of mine with larry is that he keeps mentioning how high certain athletes rank in the world right now. It isnt as bad with the individual events at this point since pretty much all of the top pros have been competing for awhile now and starting to round into form, but for relays it doesnt make any sense. How many chances have presented themselves for countries to stack their relays in the 4x1 or 4x4?

Shout out to Amy-Eloise Neale, who seemed "done and dusted" the last few years (not even surpassing her HS times) but has run stronger and stronger this season to drop 10 seconds to become the 5th seed in the 1500 in 4:13. This girl has worked VERY long and hard over the years to get to this.
Instead of football references, why don't they do speed comparisons in "miles per hour"? I can't think in yards and I don't give a damn about football, but converting relative performances into mph I can understand and I think even a casual viewer can follow too.

Why would you want to alienate/frustrate/irk your core audience?
Why don't announcers do this in Europe?
And when I watch a sport I am casually aware of, like Euro soccer, I don't want to be patronized -- I want to watch and learn ---- and listen to quality announcing.
It is because ESPN management is just like the majority of the rest of America, they only care about the ball sports. Larry was OK last night as he didn't bring up some super obscure fact in the middle/end of a race like, did you know that Babe Ruth once ran a 1 mile run? etc...
