He looks really good, the way he ran that 800 makes me excited to see what he could do in a mile. Btw, you shouldn't get ahead of yourself talking about 1:46 and sub-4. There are a lot of high schoolers who ran 1:48 high and never came close 1:46 and sub-4. Once you run fast, getter faster happens in smaller increments. Bbreaking 1:48 and running a 4:05 mile might be a more realistic goal. Even 4:05 might be too much if he is more of a 400/800 type. With that said, he finished that race strong and if can get some competition, I can see him running a second faster later in the season.

Sensible predictions. It annoys me when particularly coaches set unrealistic targets for their athletes following breakthrough performances. It can be easy to get ahead of yourself, put pressure on the athlete and not celebrate the results of their hard work. Sub 1:48 and 4:05 are good targets and if he achieves them then that is a mighty improvement especially over last year.

Obviously it won't happen, but Hunter v. Slagowski over 1000 would be the best HS race this spring.

I was responding to the other poster. I think he will run 1:48.3ish and 4:03ish this year. I've been consistently saying that sub 4 minute milers in high school have typically been cross studs on this thread.

Ryun had a 2 mile XC course record set at 9:08, and finished 4th at an AAU XC race behind college runners as a 16 year old. He also ran 9:04 on a cinder track.

Ryun never ran 9:08 for 2 miles in high school, certainly not on a XC course. I saw him run 9:13 in a night race set up especially for him where he got splits every 110y and his team mates were spaced around the track to keep cheering him on. There were two attempts at this a couple of weeks apart, and I don't recall what the first one was, maybe around 9:37.

In fact I'm pretty sure Gene McClain, beat Ryun at the Emporia XC Invitational in the fall of '63 on a very tough course, prior to winning the Golden West Invitational mile the next summer in 4:10,

I'm calling total BS on Ryun running in the AAU XC championships. Maybe you're thinking of a low key XC race with two Emporia State runners where no one else was running and they ran the race as a workout.

Certainly Ryun was a very good 2 mile runner for high school, but his 2 mile was nowhere close to the level of his mile.

Go to the link I posted. It's pulled directly from his book according to malmo, who should be reputable enough for you, and he definitely ran 9:04 at Golden West, where he took 1st. Somebody on that thread said he ran 9:08 at Wamego, which is one of the hardest courses in the state.

You could do about 3 minutes of research and find out the exact same thing, or you could be a jack wagon.

A 9:04 is not historically noteworthy for 2 miles.

Everything in my post is correct, and you're just making stuff up.

I don't think he's peaking too early. HOWEVER, he'll have a limited peaking window, and I don't know that he'll get great opportunities for optimal races. I think IF he's fresh and circa peak in an optimally paced race with good competition and excellent conditions, he can go:

-- sub 4:00

-- sub 1:47

I just doubt that he'll get in the right races this year. He'll be peaked for districts/state, but it won't happen there – he's surely tripling, and probably quadrupling (4x8 or 4x4) with this order in Idaho: 4x8, 3200 day one; 1600, 800, 4x4 day two. His best competition is in the 800 (Calhoun is #6 in the nation right now), but that's race 3 or 4, without a ton of time after the 1600. So superlative times surely have to happen either before or after that two-week stretch – that doesn't leave a big window "circa peak". I wouldn't expect him to cram a bunch of travel to elite meets around districts & state.

So I'll phrase it like this: capable of both; will only accomplish one. Which? Depends on circumstances.

Fascinated to see what he does at the Pasco mile this weekend.

1) His best time last season was actually 4:08.28 for the full mile, from Brooks PR. The best Idaho 1600m times logged last season were 4:04.78 by Paul Ryan and 4:05.83 by Elijah Armstrong from June races. Ryan, Armstrong, and Slagowski went 1-2-3 at the Brooks PR Mile, with only .31 separating them – race came down to the last 50m. Basically, Slagowski was right at the those guys' level last year. And if you look at the full season resumes, I'd argue that Slagowski was probably the best miler of the 3. (Slagowski won Pasco and Jesuit Twilight, where he beat Armstrong, and Armstrong beat Ryan elsewhere.)

2) His 2015 XC season was dramatically better than his 2014 XC season. Went from *pretty good* in Idaho (12th, 35 seconds behind the winner) to dominating the 5A state championships.

3) Clearly a massive improvement in the 800 as well.

4) His tactics last year in elite races was pretty much: come from way back, pass a bunch of people late, and try to win in a kick. If that 800 was any indication, he's gonna be more aggressive about getting to the front earlier.

Ok well fair enough I cannot argue with your opinion. It is true that he is improving. We will have to wait and see by how much he does improve.

4:05.71 for the win at Pasco (full mile). 2nd place was 4:11.75.

Not true. Ryun ran 13:38 in the 5k. He was def not the 5k type.

Ryun ran 9:13 in the deuce as a soph. He ran 9:04 as a senior with a 55 last lap, not pressing, and then came back just under an hour later to run a mile in 4:04.4 (this was at the Golden West Invite in '65). Ryun was probably capable of high 8:40's in the 2 mile in HS.
