I don't know about DQs and all, but that's the most entertaining race I've watched all year. Literally LOL.
Reminded me of women's roller derby. Know if those orange guys can kind of work in a sling shot move or whip to get their fourth guy moving a little quicker that would help.

The Guelph coaches tried to get an opponent DQ'd and their athlete(s) reinstated and criticized the other coaches for protesting! Chris Moulton and Dave Scott Thomas have the worst leadership attitudes I've ever seen in CIS sport. It is really troubling to consider the impact they're having on impressionable young athletes that are part of their school and the Speed River Track Club.
Guelph/Speed River athletes, do the right thing and have the guts to speak out against your coaches.
I likely would have piledriven that Leaf 5 metres into the track afterwards. Scumbags.
Purposefully impeding the other runners in the race. Yes...This should be a DQ.
The guy on the outside sized the passers up, and ran them further out, not to mention the sticking the arms out to deny runners the opportunity to pass.
The issue is the rest of the field should have broken this up earlier in the race.
Will say, I've never seen anything like it and so organized.

Wow - a lot of very misplaced anger issues on this thread and its related one on Trackie. I believe that some here really have some mental health issues - this was just a silly track race. To blame an entire program and all who belong to it (as seems to be the case by many here) is extremely immature.
As to the recruit - if you are going to base your attendance or not on this one race and the opinions of message boarders, then thank god you aren't coming to my school. You have some serious growing up to do.
The one athlete got dq'd, as should have been the case. Others were vetted through the officials and appeals/protests. Anything else is just hyperbole and over-reaction.
Seems like things like this bring out the worst in people (like message board tough guys), and I don't mean the people in that race. Having spoken to an athlete who would have benefitted most from dq'ing the Guelph guys - it is all now water under the bridge. This whole mess is being perpetuated by people with an axe to grind against the program (including the Queen's coach - Boyd, who should have showed some decorum himself and stayed out of the discussion entirely).

Boyd was a great runner and is a good coach. However, he has no filter and takes umbrage over a lot of things. I would take most things he says with a grain of salt.

speaking as one of the people here who are criticizing Guelph, yes we are justified in blaming the program as a whole because this was obviously a pre-meditated plan that the coaches put in place and the athletes executed.
as someone with no skin in the game, I found it to be one of the worst displays of poor sportsmanship I have ever seen in track and field. It's also cheating plain and simple, to impede another runner to that degree. I feel sorry for the runners from other teams who had their races affected by Guelph's tactics. DQ's don't completely right that wrong.
I have no problem with team tactics, but this was way over the line. Sure, it was entertaining to watch, but so are fights in other sports like basketball or football. Doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
Imagine if 4 guys running for Salazar or Schumaker pulled the same kind of stunt against someone like Ben True or Matt Elliott. We would all lose our minds. Oregon could do the same thing at NCAA's this year in the 3k. They would get crushed on these boards and by the running community at large, and it would be justified.

Boyd has rarely said anything that wasn't true. I love his posts because he says what a lot of other people are thinking but are too polite to put their real name behind (like me). I wouldn't be shocked if he has aspergers but he's a smart guy and I respect his views on track and field more than most. I've been intermittently following the Canadian track and field boards for the past decade and he's one of my favorite posters - up there with Bomba, Hutchinson and whoever Cacofonix was.

To be clear, I really like Steve too, and I agree he is a very honest commentator. However, in my opinion, he lacks some objectivity when it comes to his athletes and his program, so I don't always agree with his take on things. But then again, I am sure all of us lack objectivity when it comes to our own self-interest.

I have no issue with the wall, boxing in, and general team running, but cutting people off and throwing elbows to stop passing is a DQ.

None of what quebec28 is saying has been under dispute.
The Guelph athletes were just doing to their opponents what the Guelph/Speed River coaches have been doing to other coaches and meet directors for the past few years.
You learn from your leadership and the athletes have obviously learned that this kind of behaviour is acceptable on their team.
Yeah, those guys deserve spikes in their shins for many races to come.

Aspergers!? I think you might mean Tourettes. Either way, the people whose bad behaviour I call out (both at Guelph and Athletics Canada) only WISH it were so simple, and that what I say were so easy to dismiss.
Just one thing to add: Guelph people, don't make this worse. You absolutely KNOW I have no "axe to grind" with your program. Check the record on that if you're not sure. This is now just smoke blowing and damage control on your part, for the benefit of people who don't really know (or perhaps care) about the details. And if you have completely alienated ME over this business (and much else besides), you know you must really have crossed a threshold. There is a larger pattern of ethically questionable behavior of which this is only the latest example. Please don't make me spell it out for you.
P.S. If you're still talking about Cacofonix, you really haven't followed the Canadian boards in very long time.
The Guelph runner who had a slower PR but got in on placing as a direct benefit of the dirty tactics should be DQ'ed as well; not good enough to get in on his own, doesn't deserve to be at the next level. Who cares if the perpetrator of the actual impeding was DQ'ed, he's already into the final. This does nothing to change the important result. Anything shy of the lesser runner on the Guelph team getting DQ as well is a shame.
