Galen Rupp's 5000m Ceiling

Shouldn't it be his basement?

I mean, it seems like his ceiling would be like the slowest time he can possibly go. Like any slower and he technically would no longer be running.

If we really are thinking ceiling, everybody else is very wrong. I would say something like 28:37 is his ceiling.

Or maybe we mean his altitude ceiling? I would suspect he could go a bit higher than 5000m. He is quite aerobic, he might be able to survive at Everest height for an hour or two without supplemental oxygen.

The major difference between Rupp and Lagat is Rupp has more hard training miles in his bank.

Actually Cliff nailed his ceiling several years ago when many were predicting sub 12:50. Anyway, Ruppster has had a good run and soon it may be time for the youngsters to take over, at least on the track.

Rupp topping out at 12:55 for three miles is such a sad post-kids-birth prediction. I'm gonna predict that the Ruppy at the least just gets under Prefontaine's 12.51.4 as he hits the three mile mark of a 5k.

So, not only could've Rupp been the AR holder at 1,500 and the mile, but he also had the ability to break Daniel Komen's untouchable 3,000? Somehow I'm just not seeing it. Fake Ventolin was better.

I'll give you that Rupp could probably put down a 10,000 PR in the 26:3Xs later this year and a 5,000 PR, but what has he done in the past two years that even remotely suggests 12:40? He hasn't been able break 13:00 outdoors, despite his indoor campaigns. 12:50 back in 2012... I could see it. But 12:40?

If Rupp breaks 12:50 he should be under 24-hour a day observation by the USADA.

If Rupp breaks 12:40 he should be placed under house-arrest with 24-hour a day monitoring by the USADA.

"Whatever" Rupp and AlSal are doing will be discovered and the USADA will figure out how to put a stop to it. The "whatever" will be something no one has figured out to use/do yet, but provides a major and unfair advantage over other runners.

1) Cliff crappy face said 100 things about Rupp that ended up being wrong, previous posts about his abilities cancel out following ones about his ceiling since they contradict.

2) It's possible Rupp has hit his 5k ceiling ability wise, but his ceiling isn't his pr. His ceiling is a decent amount under his pr, and he just hasn't run it yet.

Your second point is spot on. I think a lot of detractors base "predictions" for Rupp based on their own racing experience which is likely limited to getting strung out, full on the entire way. Meaning nearly every race is a PB opportunity. At Rupp's level, when running for the win/top spots the chance to run flat out for the entire race and follow people comes few and far between if ever. Even the rabbited races don't stay on pace. What you need is a couple other guys at his level who are equally motivated to hit a fast pace. But with WR's being what they are, not a lot of motivation ($ incentives) for E. Africans to run a 12:53 or 12:49 unless it means winning the race. If it only takes 12:59 or 13:04 they would be happy to do that.

Really, if Rupp and Salazar want the 5000 AR,the best thing would be to have Levins and Farah jump in and rabbit through say 3000 and 4000 respectively as part of a workout for them. They can both handle 12:50-12:55 pace duties and stay on pace/in composure. So there you go NOP, something to think about.
