Homer to Prudhoe Bay is 1073 miles. That would be an amazing run, and it would be fairly easy to support. West to east would have to be in the winter. There would be trails/connecting routes from Dawson City YT (just east of the border) to Nome. Try that in March when the days are long, it's not quite so cold, but the snow is still good.

Detroit to Traverse City would be an awesome, fascinating run.

That's a great picture of late 1970's or early 80's runners. An Okie Relay team I assume.
It speaks loudly of the U.S. runner that most quickly look for the shortest flattest way out. Bodies too lazy, minds too shallow, the threat of something uncomfortable is to be avoided even in fantasy.
Good thread. A few thoughts...
I lived in Alaska for years. What many posters here do not seem to know is that much of Alaska is flat, boggy and REALLY buggy. Much of Alaska is high peaks that are not runnable. You would never want to run any long stretch of backcountry in Alaska. It would be miserable. The roads are also few and are overrun by campers in the summer time.
Although Maine is beautiful, much of it is similar to Alaska with bugs and wetlands. Running up the coast of Maine would be beautiful (perhaps wet) if you could do it in an off-season like April/May, or late October.
My choice would be Vermont. Vermont has 5000 miles of rural paved roads and 7000 miles of dirt roads. Running the dirt is amazing and traffic free. There are hills, mountains, rivers, lakes and great scenery. There are also many very small New England towns with one general store, a library, church, inn and a gas station. Makes for easy stopping for a drink or food or lodging.

Start at the northern border of Rhode Island and Connecticut and head north through Massachusetts. Straight through Mass. south to north and into New Hampshire. Once your in NH head west into Vermont and take that west across the whole state into New York. 6 states in 130 miles along some rivers and old historic towns. That could be a really nice leisurely long weekend bike ride.
