What if all the shoe companies pulled all of their sponsorship for professional distance runners? What would our current crop of athletes do?
I think every runner needs to consider this and find ways to make good money that does not involve the shoe companies.
Ryan Hall is probably the best at this with Vizio, Nissan and Oakley as sponsors.
This move makes sense for Manzano, considering he recently won a silver medal at the Olympics. Centro probably gets paid more, since he signed a contract with Nike after he won the bronze medal in Daegu. Based on last year, Manzano probably deserves to get paid as much as Centro. However, Manzano doesn't have the consistency or american records that other Olympic medalists have (i.e. Rupp and Lagat), so he probably doesn't deserve quite as much compensation as they do.
It's not about what you deserve. If you want a big contract go and get Kim K pregnant or something.

First American Olympic medal at 1500m in 44 years.
In every race that he lines up in he will be announced as the Olympic Silver medalist.
In some cases he will be announced as reigning USATF Champion.
I think Centro will be the better runner this year, and he was ranked higher overall last year.
But as Manzano passed Centro in the home stretch in London (not to mention the Trials), he denied Centro a medal and gained some nice marketability and cost Centro a bit.
Now he could be wearing a Nike outfit when they announce him or something else.

He's pretty much accomplished as much as Centro at the 1500m/mile distance, and he also has beaten him numerous times.
