The US high school sub 4 guy referred to earlier is Tim Danielson. He is in jail awaiting a murder trial for allegedly killing his ex-wife.

Exactly right. Accidents happen, put a few things together and you become toast. Flat tire on a downhill curve for instance, or a pothole at the apex. Even if you ride well within your limits you are vulnerable. The only thing you can really do is try to ride as smart as possible but you simply cannot eliminate risk. In addition cycling has the benefit of being able to push yourself repeatedly to exhaustion and then recover. A great training aid but Unfortunately the mechanical aspect of cycling that allows you to do this also require skills that are compromised by the fatigue of hard training. When your motor skills are diminished by fatigue your risk level rises dramatically. Not saying that is what happened here, but from personal experience even doing something as simple as reaching for a water bottle or your jersey pocket for a gel after a hard effort can turn into instant disaster. Hand caught momentarily in jersey pocket at the same time as a road hazard or a gust of wind when your front end is unbalanced by too much weight on the one hand on the bar(one reason pros usually take both hands off the bars for most tasks)

Just so many things beyond your control even on a solo ride with no cars. Cycling is a great training tool but full of hazards.

riding defensively is no guarantee of safety. I was hit by some idiot who ran through a stop sign. No amount of "being careful" would have protected me or anyone else in that situation.

Secondly, you have no clue if this kid will ever regain his full health. He is an ordinary mortal just like the rest of us.

As bad as that looked, if that really is his first time attempting to walk after the accident and surgeries, things are looking pretty good for Lukas. Not saying that he'll be able to compete again, but within a year of intensive rehabilitation he should be walking without an assitive device. Not sure if he'll be able to run fast, but he should be able to get out there and do a little something... Hang in there Lukas!

He's not "learning how to walk" . He knows how to effing walk. He currently is unable to walk. Get over yourself. Best wishes to LV and his recovery, but guys like you are tools.

He's not exaggerating in the least. This has to be agony for L.V., in so many ways. The best L.V. can do is take it one day at a time. He may very well never get back. If he can even compete in tris again, I'd say he's blessed.

For a first time attempt that looked pretty damn good.

Yep, felt very bad watching this. I hope he is able to recover. It could have been worse and he have no movement at all, but this is a positive sign.

I can't believe two morons in here are debating the definition of "is able to walk" with "learning to walk". From the reports, he has to retrain his motor neurons, in a sense re-learning them how to walk. Mentally, he knows what walking entails, but the nerves still have to re-learn through healing.

Just as a paralyzed person knows what to do to lift their arms, but their larms feel like dead weight.

First, I am a huge fan of L. Verzbicas, and this is super tragic and bad for the sport, not to mention for him as a person and his family.

Second, this is an opinion only, and not a diagnosis or and kind of recommendations.

But...

As a physician and trauma surgeon, and someone who deals with rehab on inpatients like him all the time after similar accidents, I can say with some certainty that he has a long ways to go, and I would be surprised if he ever gets back to his prior form. Now, this IS only based off his audio, and watching a 1 minute video, so please keep the below in that context.

It looks to me in the video like his right leg, in particular his knee extenders ie quads, and his ant tib are not working so well. He obviously has foot drop on the right from his brace. From his injury pattern he describes on the audio his injuries are likely central, which is bad for recovery of course. Additionally, he still has a foley catheter in place TWO weeks after a major trauma, which is troubling.

The guys entire identity likely revolves around sport, and this must be pretty crushing. I wish his a speedy recovery, and I hope for the best.
