Leo Manzano's Silver Is Worth More Than Galen Rupp's

The 1500 final was a slow time-do the conversion to the mile to see ---that's why the dude got silver--if they had actually raced it like f****** men. Manzano would be at the back of the pack.

The popularity and money associated with the marathon has caused young african (KEN & ETH particularly) talent to move up at younger and younger ages. This has diluted the competition on the track rather severly for the long distance races.

Additionally, the 1,500 seems to be "open" to more types of athetes, body types, and countries than the 10k. I have fantasized of being a top miler (not going to happen, I was a better sprinter than distance runner and I sucked at sprinting), but far fewer dream of running a boring 25 laps around the track!

The 100M and 1500M have some of the biggest drug cheats.

The mile has lost its luster. Maybe if it went back to 1609 meters.

The 100M is the biggest race at the Olympics. The marathon is the biggest race outside the Olympics.

All other track events are the same, but greater than any of the field events.

I actually think Rupp had the more impressive performance.

But historically and throughout the world, the 1500m has been the next biggest marquee event after the 100m.

I feel that both athletes had incredible performances to finish with the silver medal in their respective races (possible gold for Leo) and both men do deserve those medals, but does anyone think that Leo Manzano got a little bit hyped up watching his teamate, Galen Rupp, finish in second for the 10K? Im sure Galen taking the silver helped Leo in that it gave him confidence that the Africans could be beat. I feel that without Rupp shocking the world in the 10K there would be no Manzano getting silver. Remember, the man barily qualified for the final of the 1500.

Haha actually I didn't read that article until you posted it so those were my own thoughts. But I kind of forgot the Decathlon, that is probably the 2nd most prestigious event at the games, behind the 100. Marathon I think is still 3rd.

I agree with you, but I do think from a "value" standpoint, a marathon gold would be the next biggest long term payoff after the 100m. If the U.S. won the 100, 1500, marathon, and decathlon all with reasonably personable and marketable athletes, my guess is from a financial standpoint, the marathoner would do better than the miler or multi athlete over the next decade or so.

I would probably rank them 100, marathon, decathlon, 1500, then other golds. Obviously, there are a lot of factors that make an athlete's track & field gold more valuable than others, but all things being equal, that's where I see it (and I could certainly be way off base). It's an interesting discussion and something I had been thinking about before Rupp and Manzano both took silver.

No, Manzano's Silver is not more impressive. I'd say they're equally impressive, and indicative of the resurgence of American distance running. Before, it was Lagat followed by everyone else. Now two other U.S. citizens have won medals in the Olympic games, one ended a drought since 1968 and the other a drought since 1964. And with Lagat, Lomong, and Rupp all making moving on in the 5k, I don't think it's out of the question to expect another medal, especially from the latter two.

And I would argue Rupp's competition was just as tough. Second to Mo Farah and not by much, and Mo is clearly the best track distance runner in the world right now and reigning World 5000 meter champion and World 10,000 meter silver medalist. He also beat both Bekele's, and while Bekele doesn't appear to be at peak form, he did look good in this race and did run under 13 minutes a month ago. Manzano beat a reigning world champion and bronze medalist. Both steep competition.
