Jogger tried to not let me pass him on my run today

Wejo did his easy runs at 7:00 when he was in his best shape. People run their easy runs at a variety of paces. Get it?

Me, I just run my pace. I typically run about 6-6:30 pace for all of my runs. If someone pulls something like this, I just run next to them for a while. Who cares?

I had this happen the other day by a young shirtless kid with compression socks and basketball shorts. It was about 50 degrees outside, so I couldn't figure out why he was shirtless, but whatever.

Except if that young runner learned by example from watching the All-American that day, he would not have learned that lesson. He would have learned that the best runners abandon their easy pace at a moment's notice in order to try to teach others lessons and put them in their place.

What aren't you getting and what does Wejo running 7 minute pace have to do with my point about the All-American. He developed a training program that worked for him and did his easy running at sub 6 pace. A young runner on the team would try to impress by running with him on both of their easy days. I am sure you don't think a 16 minute 5k runner should be doing all of his easy running at sub 6 pace. So since the person wouldn't listen to sound training principles (which you don't seem to understand) and run easy on his easy days, he was taught a lesson. All in good fun and every single kid learned about recovery days and that any halfway decent college run CAN run his easy run at sub 6 pace, but most of them shouldn't. GET IT?

Trust me, it worked very well. Some kids don't listen to reason, they need to be shown. The all-american runner was the type that could train very hard every day and dropping down to 5 minute pace for a mile or so did not affect his run that day. He just trained harder than most people and the young runners should not have been trying to run with him on what was supposed to be their easy day. Not really all that hard to figure out. A couple of you aren't getting the point of the story and understanding that easy days need to be easy and there are different ways to get the point across to a young runner. This way worked very well and happened at least once or twice a year and each kid learned the proper lesson. They didn't need the lesson explained to them, they got the point and became better runners for it.

Yeah, there's no need to be a d*ck about it. First of all, 6:30/mile pace for a long run isn't all that special in the grand scheme of things.

Second, how about actually being encouraging when you pass a fellow runner? Maybe the other guy/gal is not as GREAT as you, but they're out there nonetheless, putting the work in. How about catching up, saying hello, introducing yourself, tell them they're doing a good job, and then pull away at your own pace?

You feel good, they feel good. What's so bad about that?

Hell, I've had Tegenkamp come zipping by me on a Sunday long run and even take a moment to run at my pace (7:15-7:30) and exchange plesantries before moving off. And I'm pretty sure he's better than you are.

It wasn't a real person -- it was a ghost expert for the route, in time trial mode.

Whoops, shells don't kill ghosts (and hoverboards don't float on water...unless you got power). What am I smoking?

Why did you feel the need to clip off a 5:45 mile? You fell into a trap but "surging" during your run. Learn to run your pace and stick with it.

Also remember that the park is not your private track where everyone magically knows they are supposed to get out of your way. You are one who is in the back. It is up to you to find the proper place, and time, to pass someone. It is not up to them, they are in front.

That's funny, I was in the middle of a long run too, Prospect Park Brooklyn, 6:30 pace. I came up on someone who looked fit, but not an elite or sub elite body type. Just passed him because I was doing my thing. After a mile or so he passed me. I could see him about 200 meters ahead, he must have sped by me and slowed up. About a mile later, 1 complete loop of the park for him, he peels off, the look back by him did not get unnoticed. I thought I would say something like, "giving up now? I have 2 more loops." But I've gotten to the point in life where I know I ain't breakin' any world records, and if someone really wants to prove themselves they'll let their times speak for themselves.

By the way OP, do you know what his work out was? I know a guy who run 8+ pace most of the time and runs a 2:25 marathon. Not everyone wears their accomplishments on their sleeves.

Get over yourself, not everyone is racing you in the park.

6:30 pace is not too fast for someone running slower than 15:00 5k. That pace is a minute and a half slower per mile than 5k pace for a 15:30 5k guy. And besides, some people do mileage at a faster pace than others. Not everyone slogs though high mileage at slow paces, except here on LetsRun of course, where everyone one has a 14:30 5k pr, and runs 120 miles per week

Or (assuming he didn't physically block you) you could enjoy the thrill of competition, and actually chat and joke with the guy as you're racing.

Every interaction is an opportunity to create a positive experience and relationship - if you take it.

I kind of like getting passed, I run at a pretty good pace so if someone passes me, more power to them!

I make it a policy to never "let" myself get passed by someone significantly older than me, someone significantly younger than me, or a female.

When I moved to Colorado, I met up with a group of varying levels. One day a girl was running with us on a 7-8 mile run and around mile 5 she was starting to fall off. She cut a corner so she could try and stay with us; unfortunately, one guy who was with us was threatened and started complaining what she was doing was bullshit and then he picked up the pace so she couldn't keep up. I eventually dropped the hammer on him and when he fell off, I looked back to see him cutting a corner to try and catch up. He failed.
