I was in the middle of my long run (6:30/pace) today in a local park. I came up on another runner's shoulder (he was probably going 7:30/pace). The moment I was on his left, he completely switched gears and struggled to make sure I didn't pass him.
I got a little frustrated and took it as an indirect challenge at each other's pride. so I clipped off a 5:45 mile and dropped him.
What do you call a person like this? That won't let you pass him in the middle of a regular distance run.
You call him a weekend warrior...and laugh.
Had a few guys do this as I pass them when they were running with their girlfriends. Its hilarious.
Don't be too quick to pass judgment. Sometimes I do repeat workouts on the trails around here. I'll do something like 2 minutes easy, 3 minutes hard. Occasionally, I'll find myself in a awkward position where it's time to start my hard portion just as someone is getting ready to pass me. I'm sure I look like I'm just dropping the pace to keep from getting passed, but it's really just a coincidence.
That happens a lot. I just drop the pace for awhile and lose them. I would hardly consider 7:30 pace jogging tho.

What you fail to realize is that when you put a move on them like that, they assume you are "sprinting" or "racing" and justifies their eventually getting dropped as "I just didn't feel like going that fast"
What I do, to end the problem, is to slow down to about their pace for a little bit, and then gradually pick up the speed a little bit at a time until they are running close to their 5K race pace trying to stay with you and realize that while they're laboring and hanging on, that you are still running easy, relaxed, and controlled. That usually gets the message across to them that you are the superior runner, and not the runner who feels like running harder at the moment.
My, aren't we special.
Here's a wake up call for you hot shot. You are both hobby joggers. You're just a little faster and far from special.
Most people wouldnt even mention something like this. So you are likely a zit faced teenager, searching for another pimply tool to share another story.

I don't see myself as "hotshit" whatsoever. I do see myself as competitive though. (14:56 PR)

Why is the OP posting crap like this ona message board?
Unless the 6:30 guy is competing well under 15:00, 6:30 is way too fast for a long run (for somebody training properly).
It could be that the 7:30 guy is the real athlete training properly and wanted to find out if the 6:30 guy is the weekend warrior. Maybe the 6:30 guy is the one who can't break 17 or 18 because he thinks he has to be a workout champion (every coach knows about those).
Do your OWN training and don't worry about the other guy until a race.

get over yourself. if you let someone mess with your own workout to the point that you run a 5:45 just to drop them then you're obviously full of self doubt about your own abilities.

I have had this done. I have also listened to me friend who is very very competitive ( whole other story) that he actually hung on to someone who just happened to be running by him at a faster pace.
Why?
Well, from his point of view "it's competitive" In other words, in some guys/girls world, to let someone pass you, even on an easy run is to admit defeat.
I know, I know, it is stupid, and childish. You wanted to know what is going through the head of one person that did this, now you know.
In my mind, I laugh. I know who I can beat. If you're that insecure and feel that by staying with someone, that you are now officially as fast as him/her, but never beat them in a race, then I think a therapist will smile somewhere after speaking to you for ten minutes. Because now they know they can go ahead and say yes to the contractor for their addition.

1. You do your long runs at 6:30 pace? As someone said above, unless your 5/10/marathon are something like 15/31/2:20 (which we can all tell isn't the case), you're either doing your long runs too quick or lying about how quick you do them. Most likely your weekly mileage is puny.
2. The only loser in the little story is you, for running on this guy's shoulder all day. When passing slower runners, show some courtesy: pass with a bit of authority and a polite wave. This way nobody has to run with anyone in their space. He was probably just speeding up as part of a progression or some pace work, and your inner delusions translated this into a nonexistant battle for you to get riled up about.
3. The fact that you upped your pace by 45 sec/mile to win a one-man adolescent pissing match shows how insecure you are.

Said. Funny word, that.
What's the big deal? I am a friendly person who likes to wave and encourage other runners, but I am also competitive. What I would have done: if he wouldn't let me pass, I would just run along side of him and even slow down a bit so that he thinks that he can run with me. Then, it's time to see how long he could do it. If anything, I'd have a running buddy for a mile. If that, usually these things last a half mile. But don't judge, you have absolutely no idea what kind of runner the guy was. I'm not claiming 6:30 is my easy pace (but it is my goal marathon pace) and I've had guys run their butts off to keep running with me (I'm a girl and if you think guys don't want YOU to pass..) at that pace, lasting for several miles. Who cares? I like the company.
This is how a distance runner acts tough. Way to go big shot, you really showed him. Did you finish your run with your sunken chest puffed out?
