Firstly, nobody NEEDS an iPod. Some people however prefer to use them when training gets dull. Secondly, saying that using an iPod means one doesn't know how to train is presumptuous and passive-aggressive. If you're implying that you're 100% fired up for every run and never require an occasional lift to get you out the door, then I'm sorry but I don't buy it.
That "Lift" needs to come from within. If it's not there then perhaps it's time to retire and try something else?Sometimes it's supposed to require deep down introspection (why am I doing this?).I have started many runs feeling that way, I have never finished one feeling like that.

yes, I need to run more miles (my level of speed is superior to my capacity for endurance). no, i am not lying. also, for what it's worth, the 1600 was on a track while everything else was a road race. and apparently the half was slightly longer than 13.1.

who are you to say where people should get their inspiration to run from? you get your "lift" through introspection, self-reflection, etc.
some people just like hearing catchy beats and it makes them feel good and enjoy running more.
if someone is enjoying running through whatever means and it's not DIRECTLY bothering anyone else, it's fine.

never said it wasn't "fine". The headline reads "Most annoying hobby-jogger accessory". Without doubt it is the IPod.
My approach to the hobby jogger or hobby jogger accessory is to ask: If no one was around to see them doing what they are doing, would they still be doing it?
If they didn't want to look all "ultra" while doing a 6 mile run in 50F weather, would they still have the hydration belt? If they didn't want to look bad-ass in front of their friends and others on the trail, would they wear the calf sleeves they saw a photo of Solinsky or Flanagan wearing? If they didn't want to look like beat-up veterans of the road, would they slap a strip of KT Tape along their thigh? If they couldn't put their finish line photo up as their Facebook profile pic, and hang their finisher medal in their office, would they even bother running? All these accessories have their place among people who know why they are using them, what the purposes is, and how to use them.
If I was the last man on earth I'd still train, dress and recover the same way I do today. I know plenty of fellow non-professional runners who would do the same, and that's why I think there's more than just a Nike paycheck separating the pro's from the rest of us.
I personally have a thing against the boston marathon jackets. It could be more understated in its design if you ask me.

Back when I started running the only pods we knew about was in the movie The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
At 14 years old, running 8-10 miles at a time out in the country by myself got pretty boring. I started carrying a cassette player and listening to my favorite music while running. When people who run no more than 12 miles a week have 6 different pairs of running shoes. I don't own that many myself and I run nearly that much per day during the summer.

Nice example. We have a store in Chicago full of them. They act like multiple Olympians when their claim to fame is top ten in the bucktown 5k.
You'd think they would have a clue how easy it is to buy shoes on the web instead of them, but I guess acting cool ( to themselves) is more important.

I love my compression socks and I've seen elites wearing them. They help me recover faster. They also help some people with shin splints or plantar fasciitis BUT I'm a fast runner, not a fattie...just saying.

"Jogging" for four years now aged 57. 6'2", I lost weight from 235 to 185. Have completed 15 1/2's and 60 odd 5k's most with music. Went from 32 to 23 minutes, middle of my age group at best. Developed a love for the sport along the way and stand in awe of the "real" runners. Wonder if the pros in other sports like tennis, golf, basketball...think so little of others who just want a healthier lifestyle and often are their most loyal fans.
