1. I agree with the guy with the masters perspective. The top runners I know don't have kids at home.
2. They either work bankers hours or a job in which they manage nobody.
3. Even if they haven't been a runner their whole life they have been very active with other sports or other outdoors activities.
So, I make a point that many- perhaps not all, but many - drug counselors, psychologists, maybe even a lot of coaches would agree is true and you decide that's enough to employ the classic LetsRun arrogance call-out?
I don't know what set off your alarm there, junior, but I apologize if I offended your sense of... well, whatever.
Was it because I called those who automatically look down on people who use drugs or party as less intelligent than those who don't? If that's the case, let me say again, to make a simplistic deduction that someone's dumb if they use is uninformed and, yep, intellectually lazy. Guys like you on LetsRun are like the shmucks who sit in the back of college class and deride the prof with the doctorate in whatever they're teaching about whatever it is they're teaching, and before you say "Ha!", no I'm not in any way saying that I'm that prof, nor am I saying I've got a whole lot of knowledge, but I do know a few things and now I know one more: You're an idiot.
The friends that have used drugs have been some of the smartest people that I know. They would all be in the above average IQ, one I know would be in the execeptionally high average. While the decision to use drugs is generally accepted as "dumb", not all people who use drugs are dumb.

To the person who said both IQ and GPA are correlated with intelligence: what measure are you using for intelligence?
To the above poster: what you do for a living is certainly not indicative of intelligence.
Partying hard multiple nights a week and smoking weed is obviously not going to help your running. It will in fact hinder performance. There is, however, merit in being a well rounded person. The most successful runners I know are not defined by their sport. They take it seriously, are highly competitive, but are not emotionally attached to their performance.
The people that are defined by their sport tend to be the straight edge, in bed by 9PM every night, never touch a drop of alcohol, religiously run 100 MPW (no matter how sore or sick they are) kind of people. These are the people that break down, get stale, and become too obsessed by the process (training ridiculously hard) to realize that they are actually training for a goal (running fast). I find a lot of ultra endurance athletes fit this mould.

The fastest runners I know, one being a 14:40 5k guy in high school was dedicated and persistant. Another guy was a 47 400 guy (in high school!) used to party a ton and went on to play football in college. This triathlete that always wins the local races just loves the sport. Its a mixture of things that make you good but usually someone has an identifying trait that makes him\her a unique runner.

I think it is useful to remember there's a useful distinction to be made between intelligence and wisdom.Highly talented people, athletically and intellectually, often take their gifts for granted, and, because they can dissipate and still enjoy an edge, they often succumb to that temptation, because they can, at some level, afford to. Self-discipline is a hard road for someone whose life experience is being successful without it. They only feel the consequences on rare occasions, when they are competing against people equally gifted, but more disciplined. The rest of us have the advantage of being challenged daily, and so learn early the necessity of self-discipline.

What I don't understand is your point. You "understand the limits of the [my] brain"..... I combed through my post to see if you were mocking my grammar somwhere, but apparently not...
People can be successful while being "unintelligent", whatever that means. People can also be broke and destitute while being very smart. There is no real way to quantify intelligence.
