I hope he hasn't killed himself and I don't think he deserves life least with what I have read so far but he needs to be punished if for no other reason than to send a message to teachers etc, to say this is not acceptable.

American law enforcement and judicial system will TAKE YOUR LIFE for any dalliances with young females consenual or not.People on this board have commented how sick this is but in other cultures this is not a "life ending offense" by any means and in many cases even accepted. So are those cultures "sick" or is the American way always the best way? I wonder what sociologists have to say about this?

as a father of a girl, i understand the need to imprison these guys, but LIFE for consensual sex is out of line when you can attack and maim a child and get a fraction of that sentence. the system is seriously flawed.

While I don't condone the crime, after reading about the Colorado wrestling coach, I think I would have made a run for the border.
One of my favorite running songs is "Gimme Three Steps" by Lynyrd Skynyrd which I think you should adopt as you unofficial theme song.
I don't know if Mexico has an extradition treaty with the US (they probably do) but he should go somewhere that does not have one. They will pull a Roman Polanski on him...Colorado is way out there with their sentencing.

While I also can understand the urge to run, I can't imagine it's going to be a very fulfilling life for him, wherever he is. Every where you go, looking over your shoulder. Colorado would give him 10 years to life. He'd never get another job and he'd have to live in a trailer camp somewhere with other sex offenders if he ever got out. Mass murderer and drug trafficer Manuel Noriega only got 7 years!!!
that Judge is insane that gave that guy 10 years to life. Maybe he would get a better judge, or maybe he could work out a plea bargain. you never know what would happen, maybe he could get 2-3 years, or maybe its a bullshit charge and he can beat it.
I have to agree 10 to life from that judge is insane and the wrestling coach was crying on the stand and showing remorse. Definitely punish the HS wrestling coach, but even the victim's father and the victim herself did not want that coach to get punished THAT harshly.
Colorado is indeed WAY out there with some of their sentencing laws. All of this is a throwback to our Puritanical roots. I'm not saying it is right but if it was Europe no one would even give that much of a damn.
Now Ponce is obviously pretty damn guilty or he would not have run away in the first place, so it is almost a certainty that this is not a 'bullshit' charge. Ponce should undoubtedly serve a couple of years of time give or take, maybe more, but 10 to life is pretty insane for this offense. I also think he probably needs some sort of mental rehab, rather than just a straight-up punishment.
He may be best served to keep on going down to South America and get out of Mexico. If he goes to prison as a child molestor he is probably better off as a dead man. What a sad story. He had some merits, was well-regarded as a coach, good student, but he mad mistakes he knows he cannot make, and for those conscious and illegal actions he does deserve to be punished.

That's a great link. Thank you. It makes me feel safe to know that we have a court system that will hopefully create a deterrent to sexual predators. It doesn't matter what sociologists say because this is the society we live in that WE created. If Europeans think it's socially acceptable, then that's what they decided for their society. You can classify it as "sick" or whatever else you want. The fact is that we have decided it is taking advantage of a person who is not mentally capable of understanding what is happening to them. It happens to adults as well, but children mentally and physically are not prepared to handle a manipulative experienced adult and that's why our courts have deemed this a crime. Woohoo!

No one is saying that it shouldn't be a crime, if thats what the state legislature decided. But the idea that 10 years is appropriate I think most people find ridiculous. The girl was 17, above the age of consent in most states (and Colorado too from what I understand except in a student-teacher relationship). So think about it, if she was 18 there would be no crime, but she is 17 so he goes away for a decade at least! Nothing about that seems disproportionate?

it's fine if he gets punished for breaking the law. but to start calling the girl a victim and to say that she has been harmed is ridiculous.
i doubt she views this as any different from having sexual relations with anyone else. just another "hot guy" to have sex with. she probably would have forgotten about him within months just like most people's sexual experiences.
it's called casual sex.
