1000M WR, Ngeny went through 800 in 1:44.62

It must be weird to be ventolin. Imagine being a fool who is convinced he is brilliant and everyone else is 'stoopid'.

Does anyone know ventolin? I have heard he is older, was he always like his or is he perhaps suffering from dementia? Scary stuff...

Most world class athletes I know try to avoid too many carbs and big meals in the days prior to middle distance races and even cross country races to avoid feeling heavy. I personally ran my 5000m pr the day after a 1500m race (national class times), ran better in 1500m finals when the heats were the day before, and ran my 1500m pr the day after an 800m. In my experience as a sub 4 miler, I ALWAYS ran better the day after a 1500m race/heat. Science has never fully understood the human body, and if Ventolin (a drug many of my competitors took even though they did not have asthma) knew anything about science he would understand that scientific understanding is not static. Scientific understanding is constantly evolving, refuting itself, being redefined, and always discovering exceptions to the rule. To think that you can chart human performance, which depends on as yet unmeasurable variables like motivation, tolerance to pain, pride, ego, the human spirit, chi, biorhythms, fear, and competitiveness, with a calculator and a chemistry textbook is foolhardy.

i'd bet the farm he wouda been a high-2'10 guy that day with proper 1/52 rest & specific prep for it

trying to get an 800 for him based on that :

46.5 / 1'41.8 -> 2'10.79 , 3'25.84

46.4 / 1'41.7 -> 2'10.71 , 3'25.82

looking at those, all give 2'10.7 so we go look at the 1500s

the 1st line looks too quick & last line too slow

( theoretical 1500 we are talking here - he may have been a few tenths shy of these as i don't think he was a fully fleged miler just yet - very young & only elite for a coupla years - it took hicham 4y at elite level before he was finished article & broke the 1500wr )

Well that line is about Coe - you really think he could be as fast? Some uncanny parallels: world record 1000m, Olympic record win in 3:32 over the world 1500m champion (Cram, El Guerrouj)... according to some sources Ngeny trained with a 5-pace-system like Coe did.

Ngeny Season 1999 - one of the best in mid distance history, but still El Guerrouj got the better of him

I did 1/2 mv2 without writing anything down, so I could easily have messed up a conversion here or there, but it looked like 2kg in body weight extra from the energy calculation for 2:12 1k (135 lb) (which frankly probably bears little relation to the actual energy use, figuring stride height and wind in would be necessary) would cost him 2.1 seconds, giving him 2:14.1.
