It wouldn't even be close. Ryun was capable of closing the final 400 in under .50. No way Ovett had that kind of speed. Besides Ryun was basically running his PRs in leather "cleats" on slow tracks. With the same equipment and conditions, Ryun wins easily.
Where were all these sub 50 second last 400m by Ryun? Please list them for me?
Let's look at their respective pbs:-
200m - Ovett 21.7 from blocks, Ryun 21.6 for 220yds relay leg (according to The Encyclopedia of Track & Field Athletics). That's what 21.5 for 200m and over 22.0 for a standing start? Ovett is slightly faster.
400m - Ovett ran a 46.8 relay leg in 79, Ryun 47 "flat" relay. About equal, considering Ryun's was probably 440yds.
800m - Ovett 1:44.09 & Olympic champion with 54.9/50.5 negative splits
- Ryun 1:44.3 HT (worth 1:44.50 electronic) on a SYNTHETIC track, regardless of what Ventolin claims, it's listed as the "first 800m world record on a synthetic track" in the "Progression of IAAF World Records 2007 Edition"
"Not feeling great" and a derisory 1:51 heat (practically a warm up jog) does not make Ryun's 1:44.3 any faster. I'd suggest Ovett's 1:47.8 and 1:46.5 runs the two days previous to his pb were just as insignificant. Ovett's splits of 49.8 and 54.2 are just as impressive as Ryun's 53.0, 51.3. So again, not much difference there.
Over distance, 2 Miles- Ovett 8:13.5, Ryun 8:25.2. Even if you take a preposterous 1 sec per lap for Ryun, (I consider 0.5 to be more realistic) it still doesn't beat Ovett's time. Ovett was also 5000m Commonwealth Champion.
At 1500/Mile (their main event), we have Ovett double WR holder at both events as well as European champion and twice World Cup winner, not to mention an unbeaten run of 45 races over 3 years.
Ryun's 3:33.1, I agree is the equivalent of Ovett's best time (though Ovett didn't reach his potential), and Ryun broke the Mile WR twice also, but his record in major events doesn't compare with Ovett.
So we have Ovett as having slightly superior basic leg speed at 200m, superior over distance endurance, more world records, and a far greater championship record. Yet, despite all the evidence, Ryun would "win easily" in a Mile, is the response from many!
Makes no sense at all.
"Most" of Ryun's great performances were in the US against mediocre opposition. Of course he pulverized the opposition on the last lap!!
All these amazing splits of Ryun's, which are often contradictory depending on the source, are for races which most people can't see and have never seen, as there is no visual account of them.
Ovett ran and beat the likes of Walker, Bayi, Cram, Scott, Coe, etc. His races and his devastating kick is there in countless races for all to see on Youtube. You can check the validity of his splits. How many of Ryun's races can this be done for?
I get that Ryun was an all american icon and I can see from the few videos available how awesome he was, but it's just plain silly for people on here to say that Ryun would win easily. Yeah, he might nip it on the line (though I don't think this would happen as often as Ovett nipping him on the line) but there is a complete lack of respect for Ovett when the showdown is dismissed as a one sided domination.
