Traveling across the country, could also have a big affect on the outcome. We know that at least one of these guys, has shown that he can deliver in the spotlight. Also 4:12/4:17 8:29 Is ridiculous! Tactics & talent are ripe in this one to have two guys go sub-4:00. Cheserek plays the x-factor, guaranteeing a fast race.
Cheserek is not a stupid racer when he is in an open race. He will sit on the leader until the last 100. he only goes out hard in relays because his team is so far behind. He won't ensure a fast pace... besides, thats the rabbits job.
NBC is devoting 2 hours to this meet. Mile event still captures the interest of viewers at home. As much as NBC has much to improve for its T&F coverage, I can't imagine them not showing this race.
TV coverage:
Austin Mudd's last 200 in the Indiana State Finals was around 27 flat and his last 400 in around 57 flat. I was there. His last 600 was reliably reported to be 1:28.9.

Also, who said Lukas doesn't have speed or is a true distance runner? The kid's stride is long and he has shown that he has a bit of a kick. He won this race last year in 4:04 holding off Rosa, and he beat Gedyon in the indoor mile off a 8:40 two mile and 5k the day before. No way anyone is as good as Lukas. Those who get close will be having a good race.

To the guy talking about LV and his stride: Oshier is 6'5". 48.24 open 400 that he ran mid season, after running a 1600 already. 1:51 on a day where he knew he had to quadruple. Closed with 57 after 3:03 at 1200, and in his 4:04 at OC Champs, went 58/62/62/62 in 95 degree weather. I would know; I was there.

Think of it this way, the 8:49 high school two miler would have still had 150 meters to go when Verzbicas hit the line last Saturday.

The 8:48 high school runner was in a high school race, running out in front all by himself, and running it after doubling earlier in the 1600 in heat - scoring points for his high school team. It's just possible that he might have been a bit closer to LV than you suggest had they both been in the same race, under the same conditions. Maybe not, but I don't think your comparison is fair. LV will probably win the mile but he's going to have to do it in a real race, not a time trial, and he's going to have a big target on his back with a bunch of the best high school milers in the country extremely motivated to not lose by the margin you suggest. Let's see what happens.

It's going to be incredibly tactical, Lukas will not be able to pull away from anyone! Whatever the three others do, they can't let Lukas get the jump on them. It's going to be pure BLOODSPORT!!!! Mudd's kick simply looks vicious and the guy looks like he can pump it out even further if needed! This is going to be one crazy ride people!!!!!!!!

That meet was just plain ridiculous
Girls 1600, 4:47 6th place
Boys 1600, 4:09 6th place
Girls 800, 2:07 is smashed by a 2:02
Boys 800, 1:50 5th
Girls 3200, 12 under 10:30
Boys 3200, 13 under 9 min
IU had clocks on the track at every 100 meters, so you can line it up with that and see that Mudd ran mid to high 26 for his last 200. I think the video shows he is capable of more and considering that this was the first event of a triple (indicating a desire to just win the race)that included 1:49 and 47.4ish - I think Mudd should not be ignored by any athlete in the race.
yeah you are right, it was more like 25-26, and a hand timed estimate from around the 200 to go that I had so I agree. It is still a very fast closing time regardless.
Although the title "Dream Mile" is a bit hackneyed generally, I am thinking that this race could well rank with Ryun/Liquori or Webb @ Pre. There is just an incredible amount of talent and unanswered questions leading into it....
While Mudd may not be ready to hang with the big dogs here..if it is slow there is nobody who can contend with him. He threw down a 25 last 200....that is insane. He made walden whose an 8:51 and 4:08 guy look like he was running 6 min pace. He ran his 1:49 from the SLOW HEAT and it was 85 and humid. Later he came back and ran a low 47 to help his team run 3:14 to win 4by4. It was 1 of the best triples ive ever seen.

I sincerely hope it's not tactical though.
I think Oshier is the one to lead it out at least after the first 400, and I think he can win from the front, the same way he ran at the California state meet.
