Attacking America would be very difficult for anyone (short of nuclear warfare). I think the civilian force would be a contributing factor. Look at the civilian force WE have encountered in Iraq and Afghanistan and what they have been able to accomplish. If you don't think a few thousand 'rednecks' (maybe millions) that have grown up deer hunting couldn't wreak havoc on an invading force I think you greatly underestimate guerrilla tactics. Invading someone's homeland is always a tough and it's the civilian insurgency that makes it so.
We wouldn't be so quick to launch nukes when we still have viable means of conventional defense.

The US has already spent more than $55 billion to rebuild and bolster the war-ravaged country.
