Name HS runners who have gone sub9:00 3200m AND sub 1:50

Wade Meddles 4:08 and 8:52 I think he is from NV.

Interesting, but are you only looking at the girls post-2000? Surely there must have been runners who did it in the 80s? Did Mary Decker ever run 3200?

Ryun is on the "HS Distance Gods" list at 9:04.0 so he doesn't make it even with the conversion.

As I read through the thread the only American HSers who meet the qualifications in the title of the thread are Webb and Spivey (with 880y conversion).

I find this interesting because there is a master who popped up on our local scene who ran 8:56 3200 in HS (won Illinois state meet) and then ran 1:50.3 in college. I found myself asking: how many Americans broke 9 in HS and then, at any point in their lives, went on to break 1:50. I bet it's not very many: might not be more than single digits.

The "HS Distance Gods" list would be the place to start, although it's only good through '03 or so.

very few HS runners go sub 1:50, so this question is a bit much. it should be something like sub 1:53.

I'm pretty sure Gallagher's 9:19 3k converts to a 10:00 2-mile or sub-10 3200.

Anyone know Finnerty's 800 times? I have to go do homework, but he went like 4:01 and 8:4X for the mile and 2 mile, and I think I recall Burnsville doing well in the 4x800 at state his senior year.

1:50 is probably equivelent to 4:06 for 1600 and 8:48 for 3200.

I'm sure over 100 kids have gone sub 4:10 and 9:00. I would bet not much more than 50 have broke 1:50 in high school. Probably more like 35.

2 mile became an accepted and oft run (every dual meet and invites) event in 1965

Nice job picking up that Ryun didn't break 9:00. Concerning sub 9:00 high schoolers who went on to later break 1:50 that is an interesting question. Usually a sub 9:00 high schooler is a long distance guy who moves up to the 5000 or 10,000 in college. The only ones I can think of for sure that did it are Galen Rupp and Tim Hacker who ran 1:48 or 1:49. Others that might have but I'm not sure of are John Trautman, German Fernandez, Rudy Chapa but I never recall any of them running 1:49.

It seems like Webb and Spivey are the only Americans to do it.

Another guy that was close that I don't think was mentioned is Lukezic. He ran 1:51/9:04 open times and a 1:49.6 split at nationals.

I know some Texans that did either sub 1:50 and sub 4:10 or sub 9:00 were Reuben Reina, Leonel Manzano, Steve Magness, and Duncan Phillips.

I think Guy ran close to 1:50 but not sure of 1600. Magness has 6th best mile/1600 of all time / Reina had great 3200 times / John Robinson ran at Pasadena Dobie like Gawain Guy and held Texas record for 1600 for long time til Magness broke it. He also had some quick 800 meter times.

Sully split a 1:51 something and ran a 9:13 for 2 miles. He probably could have run 1:45 and 8:30 if he was allowed to compete with his tuxedo t-shirt and Mr. G's black hat.

Matt DeBole split 1:50.3 for 800 meters in the Sprint Medley at Outdoor Nationals and ran 8:50 for 3200 that year at Arcadia.

Hammond High School ought to be added on that list of schools (if I read it correctly) with having 3 sub 9:00 2 milers in the same year. Rudy Chapa, Carey Pinkowski, and Tim Keough.

What you are saying is that all of these guys ran under 1:50. But none did.

Steve Magness had a HS best of 1:52.7.

Duncan Phillips 1:50.65.

Manzano 1:50.48

Can't find Reina's HS time. But I seriously doubt he ran under 1:50. He's not on this 800 meter list:

Hall and Carl Moe were close.
