Old thread, but it got be thinking. If someone was a 50/1:55 runner back in HS, with not just adequate but IDEAL training, what SHOULD they be capable of in the marathon?

Impossible to say as not all runners over short distances like that are built for the marathon. That said, Kipchoge could run around a 50 second 400m back in his hey day and look what he’s accomplished.
I think most 2:09 types are at least mid-3:40s 1500/4:00 mile types. Slowest 400 for that is maybe 55ish. Someone with a 50/1:55 could do it but it depends on a lot more than training. Some people could run those times & struggle to move up to the mile. Some people could run those times, realize that's where their speed is at, & realize they do well when they move up.
I don’t think you realise how close to maximum sprint speed elite runners can run in the closing parts of races. Jakob only has a 50 second 400m PB but can similarly close with a 53 in a 1500m/3km/5km.
although original poster is likely in a memory care center by now a much better way to ask this question would be, "Out of everyone sub 2:10 in the marathon who has the slowest 400", anyone that can rub 2:10 likley does mile repeats at 4:30-20 so I would say 62 minimum

I have a hard time believing that Jakob wouldn't crush 50 if given just a few weeks of focus on it. Or even if he just ran one hard at the right time of the year.

I think if you throw Jakob into a 400m race during championship season, no 400m specific training needed he runs 48.high.
Some random 400m PB that a middle distance athlete runs probably for training stimulus in his distance spikes and literally 1 day of block work beforehand isn’t really a fair way to look at their maximum 400m potential.
Nick symmonds, at 5’10 163-165 lbs could only run 47.mid over 400m and could split 49.mid 52.high in an 800? I’m so sure.
Kipchoge won the world 5k in 2003 and ran a sub 53 last lap lol...He was MUCH faster then 50 seconds all out fresh lol
Correct. Eliud could run close to 45 at that time. It is really surprising he didn’t decide to break Coe’s 800m record at that time, what with his then 12:52 and 45xx speed.
Mike Aish told me he had a super slow 400 PR, and he ran 2:13. I want to say his 400 PR was something like 57-58. That’s probably about the limits of what’s possible for a 2:10 runner.
Alberto Salazar ran a 2:08 Marathon and at best he could run 58-59 He was all slow twitch and found breaking 60 Seconds in The 400 Was a major accomplishment for him.
While I agree with this for the most part, I think you screwed up the conversion from the half to 10k.
There are plenty of guys that have run 28:45-55, and also run 1:03 halves.
You seem to be squeezing the others somewhat, in the sense that it's the minimum requirement; but this one has plenty of room to spare. In fact, I'd be expecting a guy that can run 28:10 to be able to crack 1:02.

Yes, but you cannot forget to mention that Jakob's 400m PR is from when he was a 16 year old teenager and was only a 3:56 miler. Do you seriously think at his current level, he cannot break 50 seconds in a flat out 400 when he can run 4 55s back to back?

Good on you for pointing it out, using the brain calculator on this one and am much less familiar with road distances.
