I heard that Jerry only told his athletes he was leaving well after he made his decision to leave in order to keep them all from transferring. An up standing coach and individual in my opinion would have given a little more respect to athletes he recruited and trained for 1-4 years. Personally I think Jerry is a good coach but he "screwed" the gents he abandoned.
Whenever a coach leaves a school he's going to "screw over" the program some way.
WHat if jerry does tell everyone that he's leaving in March (or whenever he decided)...then a few more transfer and doesn't that screw over the school/program that treated him well and provided him with the resources he needed to build a program, and move him up the coaching ladder?

All these guys were absolute studs at a younger age. Harding's not even on the roster anymore (is he done eligibility wise?)

Way to take the easily traveled by saying he was screwed either way. He should have had the balls to tell the athletes regardless if they wanted to transfer or not. He was abandoning them and they at least deserved to hear it so they could make plans. Further by telling them they could have had more say in finding a replacement to keep the guys at Wisconsin. By covering up his plans especially to guys who trusted his vision for them was truly wrong.

- Metcalf won a f**king national championship this year. End of story. He doesnt belong in this thread.
- The Aussie who left A&M after a month in '07 was a homesick pansy who wouldnt have made it anywhere in the US

All three had solid cross country seasons. Jon Harding was a 5th year and retired after cross. Jeremy Mineau stopped running/ retired after stanford. Nothing on Spady, He is probably banged up, he has been racing just not super fast.
I nominate Rob Conner, if we are talking purely about 2009 results. Kinsella doesnt run ALL YEAR, Kipchumba barely Q's for nats after running 13:45 earlier in the year. Betterbed was also a no-show all spring.
3 top 60 cross guys and very little to show for it.
Who are these people that claim Kelly is coaching the girls team? Kelly is NOT a coach unless things are VERY different than what every first hand account I've heard is wrong. She recruits and does admin stuff. That's it. And deals with "girl stuff". Egh.
Metcalf is not the greatest coach in the world. However, Nearly all of his male recruits are in the 4:15-4:20 and/or 9:15-9:30 range. These are always the backbone of the program and often end up being the top runners on the team (sometimes national caliber as mentioned before). The thought that this guy would even be mentioned in a list like this is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone who says otherwise has an axe to grind.
Truth is, some kids run well, others don't. Oddly enough, the better the recruit at UW, the worse they seem to do (Kiter, Fayant, Duke, etc), however I would tend to think that has more to do with the attitude and work ethic of those specific individuals than the coaching. From what I've heard about Kiter for instance, I don't think there's a coach in the world that could have helped him (maybe the same could be said about the others).
Please stop talking about this guy like he ends talent. 9/10 guys that go there get exponentially better. He's got a national championship team and consistently one of the best middle distance programs in the country (guys and girls).
I ditto the other nominations of Greg Metcalf for his subpar performance with the men's program at Washington. Even if he had done a decent job, which he has not, with the men's distance runners, this nomination, in part, is because it is so fun to see the defensive and paranoid reactions of Greg and his two supporters.

If you get a better job you generally take it if it makes you happy so good for him!

First, the athelte's shouldn't nor do have any say in the search/hire of a new coach.
Also, the athletic dept was paying him something like 90k / year and funding his program, so do who do you think of first, the athletes or the guy signing your check? THis is all a theoretical argument anyway because I doubt that the athletes knew NOTHING of his depature prior to him leaving. Bairu, Teg, and Solinsky were all still training in Madison at the time and likely still friends with some of the guys on the team, so do you think they didn't catch wind of the possibility of him leaving?
Furthermore, Calippari left in mid April, and any recruits/players that wanted to follow him did, so any athletes that wanted to leave WI had ample time (see Jager and Bethke).
Of course, Greg won the Women's NCAA, Div I. Who would expect less from him than to take the credit away from the girls who did the job, and ran the race. And, who would expect less than for him to take all the credit and claim that Kelley just helps with "girl things". He has been nominated for the horrible job he did with the men's team.
Haha, I'm anything but a supporter or friend of Greg. I just live in reality. He won a national championship this year and has a male qualifier indoors and outdoors. You obviously have an axe to grind, so this will be my last attempt to re-establish your estrangement from reality.

Well, based solely on the secondhand (actually, I guess *thirdhand*) info in your post: sure I can. I can imagine any number of scenarios in which an athlete would demonstrate that s/he needs to be "educated" on how to perform in a particular team dual meet at a particular time of the season.
Sometimes that education will only "stick" if it's at a rather high price, such as sitting out the conference meet. As my own college coach would say, "Education is expensive."
Well it appears that Greg is once again the scapegoat.
I've met him, wasn't particularily impressed by him, and am not really a fan of Greg himself when it comes down to it. But it is irrefutable that he has coached NCAA champions in recent years, and has produced some gems amidst the wreckage. In 2009 he's had more than enough successes to pull himself way beyond this list
With that in mind, can you idiots stop trying to say he "screwed up the most talent in 2009" please?
Again, he's had issues with his recruits and the program's development of all runners, but there's no way that he screwed up the most talent.
And to those of you who are trying to portray Kelly as the women's coach and Greg as some clueless administrator, get your facts straight and shut up until you see in-person how and who (THE WHOLE TEAM) he coaches.
You may not like him, I don't particularily, but you gotta respect the guy for his successes.
