Centro vs Fernandez over 1500m?

I don't really consider 60-60-60-56 a strong kick. He may well be capable of better, as that's all the faster he had to run to win, but 56 isn't in the same realm as 51.8 to close a 1500/mile.

No I understand, and I'm not saying it's amazing either, but you also have to consider that Fernandez in his race would be hitting 1200 at the same time Centro was hitting 1100. My point was mainly directed at people saying that Fernandez can only "outlast" people. I don't think he could close with Centro at PAC-10s, but I think off of a medium pace he could hammer a solid last 500-600 and possibly win. Also not that was an indoor race and his first race of the season.

I've never been to the midwest. Have you ever seen El Guerrouj really kick? Maybe that's why he has never won an Olympic or World Champs race I guess.

So who did Centro outkick when he ran 3:36? A bunch of people who consistantly go from 3rd to 10th over the last 200 at USA champs. Come back and talk to me when Centro pulls a 52 AND finishes in 3:36. Now that would be relevant.

Again, stupid logic. Just because he does not have the best closing speed does not mean he has to run a world freakin record! Heshko had a 3:30 PB and the absolute best closing speed. But did El G have to run 2:28 to beat him? No, because Heshko did not have that blazing speed once El G accelerated. That's why he nearly always beat the best kickers even when the winning time was in the high 3:30's.

I don't think Fernandez will double. He'll run the 1500 and then decide what to to at USAs. Assuming he doesn't double, he'll realize his only chance to win--he cannot change gears like Centro can--is to take it out, which is his preferred way of racing. Look for 1200 at 2:55-56, and then we'll see what kick people have.

centro outkicked a bunch of guys going 3:37 when he ran 3:36. I'm not sure what else you need from that?

again, centro can kick in at least :55 off 3:38 pace, and he can get under :52 off a slow pace. and because he practices it that kick will only get better.

obviously you don't like to hear this, but that's all there is. he has never done better. maybe he will, but he has not.

having a collegiate indoor record in the mile is about the same guarantee of winning ncaa's was as setting a woodward park very impressive mark (running solo) and then getting beat handily at footlocker nationals.

this guy thrives off of time trialing and running solo. he knows how to chase marks. but when the level of competition can match him or better, he seems to come up with 98%.

I love it... how many of the previous page of posts were just one or two guys changing their screen names? Letsrun at its best.

As far as I'm concerned, GF's ability to run very fast means nothing until he proves he can win in championship style races vs. the top NCAA competition. He's still young and will undoubtedly improve with experience, but to hand him the NCAA title in the 1500 based off his indoor times is ridiculous. Centro has proven that he knows how to race (vs. GF's time trialing)... but until Centro wins something of importance, there's really no conclusive evidence that HE is ready to step up and win the NCAA title. I'd say his win at conference was a big step in the right direction (as well as his similar style wins during the past couple of years at the US Junior Championships). Either way, hopefully these guys can stay healthy and continue to improve- it could be an exciting rivalry for US track.

And now to the real question: will Webb be able to beat either of them by the time USATFs roll around this summer?

I guess you missed that 3:36.9 victory with the kick... thats a different level from anything Fernandez could dream to run this year...

Was German's 3:42 last weekend all out or did he pull back to save himself for the 5000m later that night? I know Lubbock is at some altitude (3300'?) but still, if this was an all out run, he is suprisingly far from his indoor fitness.
