hate all you want, it's not a secret that one of Vin's goals was to make Eugene a spot for high caliber racing and as an alternative for west coast teams rather than having to travel to Drake or Penn to run fast.
there are plenty of teams to go around to the meets, in fact most of the time you hear good runners who are on the bubble complaining about not getting into the right heats because there are just too many people trying to run fast in too few meets. Oregon has actually NEVER made a point to attend Penn, they used to hit Drake but that hasn't been a target either for a long time.
if they can do everything they need to in the regular season on the west coast why the hell would they need to travel and spend money and time doing so just to get the same results?

Also, last night's results were certainly no reason for Lanana to bring his squad to run individually, so why would he go out of his way to fly out one relay team when they can stay at home, not disrupt their routine and run just as well if not better in front of the home crowd.

That's what I was thinking. Some people have mentioned that the OTC and Jerry's crew are Nike rabbits??? Those people seem to forget that along with a collegiate record there is also an American record out there for the taking, if the race goes fast and OTC or Jerry's crew are the victors (or even top American team) then they get the AR.
Any word on who the Aussie crew is going to be comprised of? It sounds like there were also a couple other pending invitations out there, any word on who else was invited?
So, since i first posted wheating went 3:40/1:47 winning both easily, rupp goes 1:50.0 mixing up the 800 specialists in the cardinal invite fast heat, and now centro 3:36.

I think the Ducks have a shot at both records.
I don't think they will be peaking for the event though.
One of the amazing things the Ducks are doing this year is posting great results and excellent times while focused on peaking for the NCAA Champs, and getting a 3rd national title in a row.
It is sweet times for Ducks and Duck Alumni...
And, it can only get better. The Golden Era of the late 70's and early 80's was predicated by a few cycles of duck excellence, and then Prefontaine's celebrity attracting a hoard of talented runners to Eugene...
The rise to prominence, should, perhaps depending on how long Vin wants to coach etc., attract even more talent over the next decade...really re-establishing the program...and probably taking it to new heights...
...This and Nike's support is what creates the haters. But why should Nike not help Oregon (and Stanford) the alma mater(s) of the founder of the company?
It is all good for track and field, an American company, a sports company, really investing in track and running, and with a huge history supporting the sport at a time when the economy is not great, and, I think Nike's stepping up for so many athletes and programs over the years...has challenged the othe companies to do so as well. Frankly without Nike supporting running for so long, I really doubt that the foriegn shoe companies would have been called to action to sponsor as much as they have... Nike stepped up the dollars, and in effect that made other companies do the same.
The next question now is if Vin and Company can have the Ducks peak at the NC's
Vin seems to have a strong reputation for peaking athletes at the right time, an art in itself.
This 4x1mile should be very exciting!

Why would you quote a 7:55 when he's gone 13:25 in the 5k? His 1325 is much more indicative of his 3k and 1500 ability. Also his 1500 pr is 3:50, so he does have a time.

an old 3:41 pr, and a 2007 cross season that looked really strong, beating some of Oregons top 3-5 guys on a few occasions.

Did Oregon avoid Penn or Drake and change the date of the record attempt to suit Galen Rupp? It seemed like indoors he had a very structured racing schedule where he started at 800 and moved incrementally up in distance until he had a "peak" race or meet - one buildup to the 13:18 5k and another to the NCAA triple. He opened up outdoor running a relatively slow 5k then 10k. Now he has started another build up, 800 last week, then mile on the relay, maybe a 5k at PAC-10, then 10k or double at NCAAs. See it however you want to - this is either a brilliant plan and they are sticking to it or just another example of Oregon bending over backwards to accommodate Rupp.

I vote for a brilliant structured plan. By the way, it seems to me that all "bending over backwards" is being done rather by Rupp accommodating to Oregon's needs for him to be sharp for the NCAA outdoors as he was for the NCAA Indoors.
