Galen Rupp vs. Scott Bauhs

I do believe Bauhs made the World XC team last year if I'm not mistaken

scotty has more upside, ie room for improvement...i would draft him over rupp any day, if such a thing existed. (it would be awesome if it did!)

I think the reason that the rupp vs. Bauhs argument always goes around and around in circles is that they both have one major fault in common: not enough fast-twitch muscle fibers to be Olympic contenders in the 5k or 10k. In the end, this is what limits both of them, and deep down all their respective fan groups know it.

Maybe one of these guys will get the American record. Which one of them I don't know. But the improvement will stop there. When people evaluate the middle-distance speed of 5k/10k guys, they say well Bauhs ran a 3:59 mile off of xc training, Solinsky closed the NCAA 5k in 4:01, and Bekele closed the 5k at the Olympics in 3:57, so all those guys are about the same. 3:46-3:50 speed is not necessary to be world-class.

Wrong! What you people have to understand is this: if we put Bekele on a track and asked him to run a workout consisting of 1 x 1600, 1 x 800, 1 x 400, 1 x 200, all with adequate recoveries but crammed into the space of one hour, the result would be sickenating! Through whatever combination of genetics and walking on uneven trails to school every day as a kid, Bekele has amazing ft fibers (when I say genetic, I don't mean that all Africans have ft fibers; I just mean that Bekele does).

When Solinsky ran a 4:01 closing mile, it was off an opening 3k of 9:00! When Bekele did it the starting pace was sub-8:00. If Bekele was in a race that went out in 9:00, he would probably close in somewhere around the American mile record.

Back to rupp and Bauhs, these guys should learn the lesson of two boys named ryan and Ian. ryan and Ian were both right around the 13:20/28:00 level, and both excelled in NCAA cross-country. They also did very well in some half-marathons at a young age, showing performances in the 61-63 minute range. But one of them decided to keep hacking away at the track, and the other made the step up to the marathon. Today, which one has more prospects as an Olympic contender?

Hopefully neither rupp nor Bauhs will go the route that Dobson did. It's a very good sign that Salazar recognized Kara Goucher's marathon potential despite her success in the 10k. Hopefully he will do the same with rupp.

It is also a good sign that Bauhs is going to train with the same guy who coaches Hall and Dobson. He's learned from success and failure the benefits of moving athletes up to the marathon.

Just one other thing to add to that last post; I am not saying that all American track runners should quit and run marathons because they are not as good as the Africans. For guys like Solinsky and Tegenkamp, they don't really have the right build to run the marathon. Mainly they are too heavy. Heck, we saw Tegenkamp even has trouble running a hilly 5k road course.

But Bauhs and rupp, c'mon guys, you have no excuse. Bauhs has already run a solid half, clearly suggesting a minimum marathon potential of 2:10-2:12. Minimum. As for rupp: he's light, efficient stride, doesn't seem to break down in response to training; he's gotta give it a shot.

Actually though, as I write this, I'm not worried. These guys are in the hands of Mahon and Salazar. They'll be guided toward their rightful futures as marathoners.

2012 Olympic Marathon trials:

rupp, Hall, Bauhs, ritz, and maybe others. Damn, and you guys were complaining they raised the qualifying standard to 2:19? 2:16-2:18 guys should consider it a true priviledge to race on the same course as these four.

BAUHS for sure, if you no anything, bauhs kicks butt and is just as good as rupp. except that he worked hard for it and didnt use any specil altitude chambers or any of that high tech stuff. granted, rup does have alot of talent. but i think bauhs has more ability and hasnt reached his full potential yet, unlike rupp who probably has peaked and leveled off. and i doubt rupp will get that much better if he does get any better.

The x factor here is... Once bauhs stops wearing dem jeans he will get 30 seconds faster!no doubt!

The progress flattens out for most guys around the 13:20, 27:30 range and they lack the raw footspeed to be competitive internationally. You'd better be capable of a sub-3:55 mile to compete well internationally and a sub-3:50 if you truly want to be world class and a medal contender at any classic distance under the marathon. Remember when everyone was foaming over Teg and projecting 12:50ish type efforts in the very near future? Remember how the originators of this message board went all goo-goo over Ritz and prognosticated him as the first caucasian to go under 27:00 for 10k?

Bauhs and Rupp will find their way to the marathon, regardless of how they train.

Rupp: DI NCAA champ, 2nd at Oly trials, 13th at Olympics

Baughs: DII NCAA champ, 16th at Oly trials

Using the age old running formulas of place and time, it's quite clear who the better runner is at this point.

You're a dummy. The expression "hard to argue" means that one runner (in this case Rupp) has had a significantly better career and that any argument to the contrary would be very difficult. Your correction of "easy to argue" implies that both Rupp and Bauhs have had equal careers and it would be easy to put either runner over the other.

I think both Rupp and Bauhs are amazing athletes, talented, hard working, and humble. They've also accomplished some similar feets, like winning national cross country titles and running sub 28 for 10k. I'm curious though who has more potential to improve as distance runners. I hope we see them have long, successful running careers. It would be nice to see both compete on the same U.S. Olympic 10k team some day. Maybe 2012? By then both runners should be able to put away a serious 10k, probably sub 27:20.

Bauhs could run 3:55 - her ran sub 4 at the chico track against zero competition and off of XC 12k training.

I do think we will see some different abilities this spring, if all is well and Bauhs and Rupp stay healthy. Rupp gets stronger every year, as demonstrated in his 30/40 workout, which also tells me that his lactate threshold is higher. I think Rupp has the fast twitch muscle fibers, strength, and endurance to be a good 10,000m runner (27:00-27:10) and a decent 5000m runner (13:05 - 13:10). But like this poster said, they lack the world-class all-around muscle fibers, the slow, fast, and the ultra fast. I do think they have a lot of room to grow though. I think both can become very good marathoners some day, but I think Bauhs success in the longer distances will be more limited than Rupp's success. I think Bauhs should train with the Portland group though, whether it be with Rupp and Al Sal or Teg and Schumacher. Then again, Mahon seems to be the better marathon coach, even though Salazar has done some good things with Kara Goucher.

BAUHS has never been trained like Gaylen..come on. All this help from Nike since like freshman year of H.S.

BAUHS is better and more talented.
