Well take off the reaction time, since the timers react to the runner. Then take off another mini chunk of time for the timer's reaction time.

Then subtract 4 yards or about .3mid seconds and you're looking at a sub-4 40 time.

The 200 was beautiful. He put the hammer down and ran all the way through the finish line. Saved the celebrating for afterward. Me and the Bolt - we're square now.

Here's a quote from one of the 200m runners in the 1996 games - he seems to agree with me. (This is from Tim Bolden's SI article linked on the front page).

Here he references Bolt's celebration at the end of the 100 meters. "I think it was a spectacular performance,'' Fredericks said. "Most of us, as track fans, would have liked to have seen what he would have run if he had run through the finish. I did stupid things when I was young, too. Please. I guess we all have short memories but let me remind you that the typical attitude of a sprinter is so self-centred, so aggressive that the ones who take care of "business" end up being the biggest prick's you'll ever see. They make NFL players seem humble in comparison. Enter Usain Bolt, is he confident? Yes. Is he being a jerk about it? No.

There would be some sprinters, who would be screaming I am the best, screw all of you, because I am the best. Usain is not like that at all and he would have every right to be given his absolute destruction of everyone. He made world class athletes look like kids at a middle school track meet. There was no malice in what he did to celebrate, again, you look at the ego's on some of the sprinters of years past and you couldn't say that about them. They were belligerent, aggressive and angry Usain is just happy, I am sure he thinks he is better than everyone else now, but that’s because he is.

So this bitchin about his "theatrics" is just ridiculous and probably fuelled more by Usain being Jamaican rather than American, if it were a American doing that, I am sure he would have had more support.

Our issue is not how he acted after the race, it was what he didn't do during it - that is, he decided not to perform his best. Is it too much to ask for him to care about it enough to focus 100% for less than 10 seconds?

I couldn't give a rat's a$$ about what ANY sprinter did for celebration, so long as it was after the finish line.

And does it really matter that he still set a WR? If it does, I guess there is no reason to praise a special olympian for giving everything they have to run a "slow" race.

No it doesn't matter that he set a world record, it matters that he was the fastest in that race. Look I think what Bekele did in the 10k/5k was amazing, just as amazing as Bolt in some respects and its becuase on that day, with the best in the world competing they won. I don't care if they won by doing cartwheels to the finish line they won in a fair manner, against the worlds best.

So what he celebrated before he hit the end of the race, who here has ran every race to the wire? I know I havn't, if I am winning I will ease off the pace why the hell not? Granted I am no Usain Bolt thats for sure, but I think most of the people here who are whinning about his unfocused attitude need to look at what he actually did... and that was indulge in a moment which very few in the world have ever experienced. I think its a lot of jealous people who wish they could be as fast as him, and as cool under pressure as Usain was. Not everyone needs to react to such a situation in the same way, what you saw was a young guy stupify the world, the experts and maybe himself and he is getting slagged because he celebrated early instead of running with concentration of Buddhist monk, well the hell with that. Some of you guys are just uptight, probably afraid of dancing in public, Cheney look alikes and can't stand see someone running faster, better and with out the attitude your used to. Hats off to Bolt.

I haven't run every race to the wire either, but that doesn't justify doing it. The point is, I (and many others) were simply disappointed that he didn't take advantage of the biggest stage to perform his best. And that would be all there is to it, except people keep praising the way that he did it (MJ, and Brojos especially). I feel he should only get credit for running a WR in 9.69, no more no less.

I could be wrong here, but Bolt's celebration is a bit reminiscent to Floyd Landis pumping his fists at the Morzine (mountainous part of the Tour De France) after his fantastic performance that day and Floyd was subsequently caught for (synthetic) testerone use.

People celebrate, it could be normal or it could be an indication of being all pumped up. That Landis even threw a bottle at a camera-person.

Now, I thought Bolt did a little cross before the 100 M race, that looks good so I'm not decided, but in Landis' case, one might think he was pumped up abnormally to be acting the way he did.

Cycling fans ever so often as with Landis and Ricco this year in the TdF, have seen performances where a rider really crushes the course and have been shown later to have been using substances.

That doesn't mean it is the same with Bolt. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt as there are other runners in the past who have given good performances without being questioned.

But it is stuff to note.
