...Michael Johnson described as "the greatest 100m performance in the history of the event".
I have to agree.

A keen observation, considering that he set the Olympic and world record in the Olympic final.
It's gotta be way up there. I mean Asafa's record was already so fast, and he has lowered it by .07 in two nice chunks, the second one and more impressive being at the Olympics after a poor start and while celebrating the last 20+ meters... really something else. There have been a lot of great 100m performances over the years that can't be overlooked... to say it's undoubtedly the best might be selling some of the others short, especially with Gay not healthy, but it's definitely in the running for the greatest ever and what happens amongst all of these fantastic sprinters over the next few years will undoubtedly determine this race's place in history.
Bolt's an idiot for all the theatrics before crossing the line. He could have done so much better.
Its the olympics times dont matter. He'll crush the World Record in Europe later in the season anyway so why not celebrate early.
And Gay being health would have made a difference?cha
You're the idiot. Why set a record which will be harder to break later?
Better to lower it a little bit at a time several times and reap the rewards several times.
just saw the video and i can't believe how much he shut it down the last 1/4 of the race. his arms were completely unengaged the entire last 20 meters! catch a better start, a tailwind, and running through the line--scratch that, bolt didn't even run TO the line in this race--and you're looking at another full tenth.
he's going to get bonuses every time he breaks the WR. Why max it out already?
I remember seeing an analysis of one of the 100m world records (I think it was Lewis) where they broke down the race into 10m segments; I think he was covering 10m in 0.83 sec when he was running his fastest. I'd love to know what kind of speed Bolt was showing in mid-race.

Here's why - you never know when your hammy's going to pop, or one of a million other things that keep you from doing it. Don't f**k around just to lower a record 'later'. You may never get that chance again. And it's disgusting, to be frank, to see someone tra-la-la around when they should be all about business.

Whatever dude if it was Gay celebrating a win you would be celebrating with him. Don't be a hater
Can see your point, and there is something about shattering a WR like Beamon did, but Bubka made a lot more off breaking the WR than Beamon did.
Usain IS all business, until he's won, then he's just having a good time. He won about 65m in the race and after that he was just dancing in celebration, let him have it.
yea no one is coming close to 9.69 for a very long time.

it should all be about business? isn't that what he's doing by saving his all out effort for later? he'll get money each time he breaks the record. that IS business

I remember this too. It was about his WR at the Tokyo WC. Great article. Sadly, I believe it was from Runner's World magazine.

Yep. He could have improved significantly on his first place finish. Zeroith place was definitely within his reach, but he blew it.

Mr. Spock is right; he could have done better. 9.60 and an Olympic gold is better than 9.69 and Olympic gold. Shattering the record, further captivating the public's imagination, would have meant more in endorsements than any potential bonus he might get if he happens to be lucky enough to stay healthy and break it again.
Why should he be all bussiness? Its track not brain surgery. Let him have fun if he'd rather do that. Its not hurting anyone.
My sources tell me that at 80 meters when he realized he was about to win a gold medal in the Olympics, he did a quick analysis of the relative cost/benefits of running 9.60 as opposed to 9.69, and though he gave serious thought to reigning in all of his emotions, putting his head down and running until he hit the stadium wall, his pesky adrenaline somehow took over and he unfortunately was pulled into a 'normal' human response. Damn emotions! He'll probably regret today for the rest of his life!
