At what point do you say he should train fairly normal-like?? 52:44 is not all out for him, and we're a couple days from August. Heck, he was minimum 20 secs/mile slower than an all-out effort. Mono sucks, but it's not exactly a permanent sickness... and you're talking about him being stupidly cautious to the point of wasting a running year at Stanford??? I had tendonitis once. Maybe I should stay off my feet.... years later.

Looking at this objectively, Derrick has ran faster in both XC and track. (5k is more important distance than 2mile). And his track time was completely solo, his first hard effort of the season, and very early in the season. These, of course, are variables, but so are Virgin's 100 degree heat, russian comp, etc.

And its pointless to say Virgin crushed his comp. So did Derrick, he beat Kevin Havel (8:50y) by a lot at the state meet and Colby Lowe (8:47y) at NXN.

Its impossible to say that one runner is better than another (in terms of their HS achievements), but to say that they are not on the same level is ignorant and stupid.

Derrick would have been the 2nd best 2 miler in the class of 08 this year. I highly, highly doubt he could have beat Mr. Fernandez. He did run a 13:55, but this kid can\'t even get under 4:05 or perhaps even 4:10 for the mile. He wouldn\'t have the speed to stay with Fernandez, and Fernandez was on a level of his own.

In NCAA 08 or on the track, I predict Fernandez will definitely have faster times/finish higher than Mr. Derrick. Just wait and see.

Why would Derrick want to wear Virgin's shorts? They're 35 years old, have a bunch of holes in them, and don't smell too good.

If you compare the part of the season that Derrick ran before he got sick, he's still ahead of Virgin. He ran several fine doubles (I can't remember them all offhand, though...two or three 8:50/4:14ish doubles which were at least comparable to what Virgin had run by that point), and would probably have run several more had he remained healthy.

And to the senile fool saying Virgin would have killed Derrick, how many soon-to-be 8:34 2-milers did Virgin beat in cross country? What's that? None? Oh, did you not realize Fernandez reset Nelson's 2-mile record? Or did you just forget? Not to mention that 2 future 8:47 guys weren't even close.

One more thing you remembered wrong/made up. The competition wasn't that deep in in 1972-73 Illinois. See this list:

you are a tool. The "average" runner would be thrilled to run 8:00s on a ten-mile course in humid weather.

kevin havel is very good (7th at FLN), but he was not an 850y guy. I believe he ran 858m at his best before skipping the post season.

maybe "hilly" for central IL, but I'd call it "rolling" anywhere else. still an awesome time, no doubt about that.

Derrick got more press and attention by NOT running all season than GERMAN did. Derrick is a bullshit artist of the highest order. 4.57 GPA, a ton of racked up crap. Then he said he could have run sub 8:34 against German. Of course that would have beaten German. Anyway the kid is a real tool. Sorry, I really dislike this kid. I got 2 sons in the IB highschool program and 4.0 and compete nationally testing all over. I showed them Derrick's bullcrap and they both could not stop laughing. They told me exactly how he rigs the 4.57. 200 kids in my kids class could rig the same. I don't believe he had mono. German would have destroyed him. Sorry I'll shut up now.

No he didn't. He said he would have loved to be in the race and he doubted he could hang with German. As for the grade point stuff, I had a 4.30 which came from taking 10 AP classes over the course of junior and senior year. No cake walks but they are graded on a 5.0 scale so when you get all A's that will boost your GPA. The fact that as a parent of 2 you are calling a just graduated high school kid a tool and saying how much you dislike him shows that it is in fact you sir who are a tool.

One more point on this kid. Yes, he donated his winnings back to charity, but he didn't make a big deal out of it, the race director did. Actually Derrick couldn't even hang around for the awards ceremony because he had to leave to go to WORK!

Good grades, disciplined athlete, and hard-working. Seems like a pretty well-grounded young kid to me.

Don't know about pericarditis, sorry. In the fall of Virgin's freshman year at Illinois, Virgin took regular turns thrashing the likes of Greg Meyer, Herb Lindsay and Gary Bjorklund in cross-country. Those guys weren't exactly stiffs and they didn't exactly lay down to let a freshman beat them. When Derrick finishes in the top 10 at NCAA XC his freshman year, I suppose we can continue the discussion. It's very unlikely Derrick will finish in the top 10 of the PAC 10 this fall. I wish him well though.

They have NO humidity in California!

I ran 20 x 400 on Saturday morning and choose NOT to race Waterfall Glen because of the extreme temps.

The temp and humidity may have been equal to the brutalist day of the year so far here in Chicago.

The course is no cake-walk, especially during the shaded parts when you feel like you are running thru a tube with no air. Then get to the open spaces and it was burning hot.

Just look at Kafel's time (a guy who can break 50 for 10 miles) and figure out how much better Derrick ran than anyone on this planet on that day.
