The point about California and depth is not really about this year but about the performance on the California course compared to the last 20 years of California runners, many of whom have raced on that course. It has an eighth of the population of the country and probably a sixth of the population of top HS distance runners (maybe not a strong a ratio as Colorado or Oregon at times but that denominator of 36+million has a big weight).

Buuuut... he has a long way to go to actually match that.

youre an idiot. you still obviously have no idea what a 14:24 5k on that course means. no one is matching up GF with the rest of the california this season. they're comparing him with ALL of california over the past 20 YEARS. it should only serve to be more impressive that california times are so slow this year but GF is still out there, lightyears ahead of everyone else

By the way, if you want to spread your message, you might as well get the initials right. There's no such thing as FTN. Unless that's the secret federation of uber-elite internet posters and runners that is controlling who wins the championship and who gets popular from it.

Actually, if you look at the post I responded to was saying that he would obviously win because of how much he dominated the state California this year, since California is almost always the deepest state in the country. I was simply pointing out that California, this year, is not as strong as it typically is. Never said that I wasn't very impressed by his performance, and never counted him out. Just trying to point out that for an outstanding runner like him, the margin of victory is irrelevant, no matter who they were running against.
And after having read 26mile235's second post, I now see what he was trying to say.
...Either way, doesn't really matter what I think. I'm looking forward to FLN this year, it should be a race for the ages.

I concur, the race is quite something to anticipate. (As for the California thing, normally both comparisons: 1) records of past performers, and 2) record/margin against current runners, would be telling. This year mainly it is the first that tells us the most since, as several have pointed out, the state is a bit thinner at the top than usual (on the men's side).
Colby Lowe will dominate... because he is the man. He can also handle a really fast first mile better than anyone as a he is a psychotic front runner and regularly goes 4:30 his first mile. He hasn't had anyone to push him the last mile and always looks super relaxed crossing the finish line. He also has a nasty kick. Anyone else see his 58 the last 400 of the 3200 at state last year when he ran 8:59 and looked like he was jogging?

That is why I'm so excited about this race- Puskedra, Fernandez, Derrick, and Lowe are all guys who go out and push from the gun. When they're having a good day, they all leave the field behind fairly quickly and don't look back. You could probably count on one hand the number of guys that have been within striking distance of the "big four" with a mile to go for all of them put together. Ritz was a nasty frontrunner, and he put out some monster performances. What happens when you put (more or less) evenly matched frontrunners in the same race?

Very True, but German's 14:24 is over 50 seconds ahead of what used to make footlocker on that course.

I noticed in his interview that Fernandez mentioned an earlier race where he ran hard and that it took him over two weeks to recover. It really doesn't look like he will be fresh for the FL West race, and if he qualifies, he will have his hands full with Derrick and a few others.
He collapsed but then immediately got back up and started running again. The race he took 2 weeks to recover from was a HALF-MARATHON.
