Josh Cox qualifies in Dayton at the US Air Force marathon

The course is short bu about .6 miles.

Dick Beardsley thinks that he raced too many marathons too close together and cut his career short.

Does Dick Beardsley think that Josh Cox is another Dick Beardsley? Did Dick Beardsley take 2+ years off from meaningful training and racing in the middle of his career?

I think u meant to ask if Dick B. took two years off to take care of his dad who had stage 4 cancer. Cox will never regret that decision.

No, that's not what I meant to ask, a-hole sycophant. It doesn't matter WHY he took the time off, his dad's ghost or spirit won't make up for it come November. It has to do with the impact it'll have on his fitness, which clearly wouldn't be the same as it would be if he hadn't taken the time off. Making a saint out of Joshie won't miracle his ass further up the results and onto the team.

I, for one, will be at the trials and will be pulling for Josh. I think it's a great story. Do I think he will win or even crack the top 5, probably not, but you have to admit, he is doing what the rest of us wish we could do.

I wasn't meaning to get personal. Honest. I got a little ticked at someone who went out of his way to misinterpret the meaning of what I was asking and why and injected his bias into his reply. I don't have a problem with JC, I have a problem with someone trying to sidetrack a point I was making. You shouldn't be offended if you understand the point I was getting at originally. My reaction had nothing to do with JC or anyone else besides "Family first".

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this, but damn he looks like JJ White (old Stanford stud) here.

Yeh, those airport runways are usually pretty hilly.

Actually there is a runway at WPAFB with a pretty big hill on it. It is no longer used, except for soapbox derby competitions as in this linked photo:

Apparently it was built so that heavy aircraft could get a gravity assist and launch off a shorter runway.

I'm not positive, but I believe that the second-place finisher, Chuck Engle, ran a PR (a low 2:31). A bit surprising, considering that the guy has run hundreds of marathons already (I think that's accurate; he ran 50 of them last year) and is at least 36 years old. I know that he has a reputation for somehow finding marathons that can be won in over two-and-a-half hours. I wonder if he knew that Josh would be there.

I can't speak for Chuck Engle's motivation in selecting marathons, but I think it's more a matter of running an awful lot of marathons pretty fast. If he were cherry picking, he wouldn't have run Chicago and New York last year. For what it's worth, marathonguide has him running 6 marathons over the past three weekends and he only won half of them . . .

I'd say 6 weeks is enough time to recover WHEN YOU HAVE NO CHOICE! He had to qualify some way.

this is funny that someone post these results....at the top you see how beardsley performed at OT in 1980...he once stated that he run too many marathons close together....also you forgot to post his results after 82...he never was able to run well when he needed to qualify for olympics....do you know what happen to him in 84....not enough optimal training

Evidently, Josh Cox got the B Standard, not the A Standard. The marathon has updated its results. Josh Cox is listed at 2:20:55 now.

Early today, this article mentioned that race officials weren't sure if Cox ran 2:19 or 2:20 since he evidently finished earlier than anyone expected at it caught them off guard. At that time, the article didn't mention Cox running 2:20:54 or 2:20:55. But the article has now been updated now to not mention the confusion over his finishing time and it now states he finished in 2:20:54 even though the race results state 2:20:55. Interesting.
