i would say the hardest thing is getting that speed endurance for the 3k 5k range other wise you are working specifically on speed or endurance i have found this hard so far
What is your 3k PR? One workout that seemed to help me a lot for the 3k speed endurance was 5 x 600m with 200m jogging recovery. I did this once every 2 weeks or so during the season when I PRed at 3k. My PR was 9:13 going into that season and I got it down to 8:58 (my 1500 PR was 4:04 so my 3k PR was seriously weak).
When I did the 600m workout I would run about 1:42 (68 pace) and the 200m jog usually took about 50-55 seconds.
I ended up running 15:45 for the 5k that year which was a PR (and I wasn't real happy with the race...I could probably have run 15:20) and my 1/2 PR was only 1:14:45 (and 800m 2:02) so you should be able to run much faster than 15:45 for 5k. I'm not sure if the 600s workout will work good for the 5k. Maybe a similar workout such as 5 x 1000m with 200m jog but at a pace closer to 5k pace.
But for the 3000m I really like the 5 x 600m workout. It seemed to be the missing element for me. I had run around 9:15 quite a few times before breaking through to sub 9.
