Jimmers: That's pretty cool. I got third there. I ran for Allegany (in MD). I remember James Buchanan, I think you guys and Trinity (in PA) beat us, we got third. That was always our first meet of the year.

My first race after training was a 10 miler in 1983; I had never used a watch to run, and had no idea what pace I could run, but since I was a good athlete, I figured I could run under 70 minutes. I went out at 6:25 or so, and by three miles was ready to quit. I did some walking, and ended up running 81 minutes. My next 10-mile race--after buying a watch and actually finding out what I was doing, I ran 59:--, a 22 minute PR (my current PR is 55:22). Pretty hilarious!
Hornet, were you running off with a copy of Hustler magazine?
Oh yeah, I remember you guys to. Don't remember how our teams did in relation to one another. I think they stopped holding the meet at the Academy sometime recently (it was called the tri-states invite correct?) and have held it on JB's new 5k course (maybe for only like one year due to construction). I still get back to the area very frequently, and see faded white lines from the XC course. The Academy also has changed their course.
For marathon training, I do mile repeats over the last mile of the course that is a half mile uphill, followed by a half mile downhill.
Hell, I'll probably run on grass over at the Academy this weekend.
Small running world.
Definitely small world. We ran there every year except my Senior year, we were scheduled, but there was a tropical storm or something and it was cancelled due to flooding. I won it my Sophomore year (94) and got second to a red-headed guy from the academy my Junior year, he beat me by like a second or two (16:40ish). Overall it was a good course. If I remember right the last mile was uphill on a dirt road and then down hill on asphalt down to the Start/Finish line. I always enjoyed venturing up to PA for some invites and compete against some new teams.
Ha, my junior year I was second (you were first), senior year third (you were second). Damnit!!!
I live in the DC area now, and do decently in the local road race scene, and have run a somewhat decent marathon (2:27). You still run at all? Run in college? Wanna come down to DC for another race and give me a chance to avenge my loses???
I'd bet we ran some other meets in common too. Hartford Invite? Boonsboro Invite? Williamsport Relays?
1988 sophomore year HS xc. JV 2 mile in a cow pasture. 12:12, 18th / 63 runners. Hot day late afternoon, dust, cow dung and a lot of fun. I was hooked.
That's pretty funny. I ran in college. Didn't do great, a couple 33:00 10k's. I now live in Atlanta and after a couple years of not too serious running have started back and actually training for the Montgomery County marathon in the parks on Nov. 9th, so you could have your chance to avenge previous losses. I'm currently shedding some weight and finally getting into form a little, so hopefully by then I'll be ready to roll.
I've heard of those other races, but unfortunately we didn't race in any of them. We mainly just stayed up in the Cumberland area, especially in track. The only XC invites we would go to would be Mercersburg, Spiked Shoe at Penn St. a couple times, and Frostburg Invit, which was in our area.
I think I'm doing the Steamtown Marathon in October as an attempt to get sub 2:22. All I gotta do is get my last 10k down to a reasonable time.
Anyway, good luck at Marathon in the Parks.
It was dredging up some old high school memories. This weekend I'll be seeing a bunch of my friends who I ran with in HS, I'll bring this up. I might even have that senior year race on tape.
Take it easy.
Depends on what you consider a race. Just to cover all the bases and to go on and on about myself like I enjoy doing, I'll give you three "first races".
1) 5th grade Field Day - The Two Lap Race - that's what they called it - two laps around a field. I won of course.
2) 9th grade - my first track race ever - 1600 in 4:54. I won of course.
3) Memorial Day road race of 5 miles after my freshman year in high school - run at Scioto Downs horse race track. Ran 30:12 and won my age group of course.
October, 1978, the Duck Pond at The University of Oklahoma in Norman in an AAU XC meet. I was 12 years old, 5'9 and maybe 100 lbs, and the other parents were yelling about this 15 year old (me) pretending to be 12. I ran through constant screams of liar and cheater to a second place finish. I was in the lead until the last 100 yards. You should have heard the screams for that kid who passed me.
I was so shaken that I didn't run again until I was a sophomore in high school.
February 1971, Bombardier(?) indoor facility, Montreal. Ran the under -13 1000 metres in a cool 3:40. Won easily. By the way, was the only under 13 entrant in the race.
