As long as eric houle is coach at Southern Utah University---------- DO NOT GO THERE if you want to be happy or develop as an athlete. The school is incredible, but until the coach is fired, no kid should ever run for him. all his previous "success" is a lie, just ask any of those guys who have run there. Again, great school, but needs a new coach 10 years ago. once someone new comes in, I would send everyone I know there.
Nothing against Lee which does have a good program but using Ninteretse as an example of “10:24 -> 7:59” is hilarious.
He ran 10:24 as a sophomore in HS. That was his last available HS track result, but he ran sub-16 in XC as both a sophomore and junior, so very clearly not a “10:24” guy anymore. Then to Bryant where he ran 24:37/14:45. So yes, still good progression at Lee, but framing it as Lee developing him from a 10:20 guy to a 7:59 guy is totally disingenuous.

Academic exclusivity shouldn't be a factor limiting schools in this discussion. They have guys who are slow and get them running fast. The school being difficult should if anything be a point in their favor.

The thread is titled "colleges that actually develop runners". Seems like it gives an advantage to schools that dont recruit well to not allow discussion of those that do, no? Or do you think BYU or Washington don't develop athletes because they also recruit good athletes?
OP should have just titled the thread "what school's will let in mid tier runners and have a good reputation?"
Gonna disagree with you here. I have old hs teammates who run there who are required to cross train 2- 3 times a week because their bio mechanics aren’t good enough to handle 7 days of running. I also have friends running all 7 days there running 35 miles a week. You are simply wrong.
What are you talking about about? My kid is at Wartburg and the coaching staff is very conservative with mileage and intensity. Lots of cross training and supplemental work to try to keep people healthy. I've been shocked at how little the athletes are running given the success they have had. I get that people want to hate on Wartburg (I was one of those people, too) but don't make up stuff about them.
I would take a look at some of the programs in the Division 3 Middle Atlantic Conferences. Yes there are some bottom feeders like any other division 3 conference but several programs who have developed National Champions/Finalists
Yes, Henes has developed some nice runners including Hartman and Napoleon. Add on Bush and Gapes recently too.

Napoleon was the overall Gatorade Player of the Year for entire US T&F in her senior year for her high school record in steeplechase.
Hartman was a 2 time winner of the Ohio Gatorade xc award.
Most coaches would be ecstatic to have these type of recruits to start their development!
Gatorade winners are all over the place at NC State. Rauber NY, Scheffler OH, Quarzo PA, Michalak CO, Shea MA, Wisniewski OR (2x), Engelhardt CA (3x)and Stephens MD (a recent transfer out) were all also winners of their home state Gatorade award.
NC State does pretty well on recruiting front, AND also develops runners well too.
Hartman really wasn't a "blue chipper" in high school. She came a bit late to running, around her freshman year of high school, IIRC. It was obvious that the natural talent was there but she needed someone to nurture it and Henes has done a good ob with that. She is also mentally strong and pushes herself. Huge amount of natural talent, though.
Lang before Hartman at NCS was Dominique Clairmonte. Clairmonte had a great junior season and was the ACC champion in XC and helped the Wolfpack to a 2nd place finish at the NCAA championships.
What is up with Wisniewski? She hasn't run this fall, even as unattached.
This just isn't true.
Hartman was for sure not a national star, but she was 2 time state champ in xc in Ohio, and as I pointed out was selected as the Gatorade outstanding runner award for Ohio - TWICE.
The only reason she was even slightly under the radar nationally was that she did not qualify for Nike or FL during high school.
When someone talks about recruiting someone based on potential, they usually are not talking about a multi time state champ and Gatorade winner from a state with strong xc tradition.
I'm also not sure if coming to running as a freshman in hs is late. Sure there are stories about kids who started early with club, or 7th graders running at nxn, but most kids do not start xc til high school. Late to running is more someone who only runs senior yr, or maybe jr and sr.
Wisniewski, by the way a state champ and Gatorade winner from Oregon, is either just taking a planned red shirt season, or dealing with injury.

I coach at a rival ARC school. Everyone loves to hate Wartburg but the truth is it’s mostly jealousy, certainly is for me. They have nice facilities, but don’t really stand out in ways that any other school does. I was a 4:44 guy in HS and they recruited me like I was Galen Rupp. Handwritten notes, visits, etc. Steve Johnson built that monster of a program with a great system and absolutely relentless recruting. His predecessors have done a great job taking it even further. Wartburg is an absolute wagon, and they deserve it.

East TN native here - raced against Edimo in HS and was (almost) recruited by Morgan.
I've heard a lot about him to this effect, but you can't deny he gets results and develops well. 14:45 to 13:57 is very substantial. I have no problem saying he's the best coach in Tennessee, maybe barring Polk at Lipscomb.
Chris Layne at Milligan is a similarly polarizing figure but that program is fun to watch. Takes in a ton of local 4:30 miler and churns out NAIA national caliber teams.
Yared also walked on to the ND team. Also it's a great school academically.

Jared was Kentucky State champ in xc, 800, 1600 & 3200 and of course, a Gatorade award winner for Kentucky in xc. His high school bests were 4:06/9:06.
Like Markezich, if he really did walk on, he and his family was choosing to pay at Notre Dame instead of going free elsewhere, and they moved him to scholarship pretty quickly.
The major reason Notre Dame is able to recruit so well is that they have always had full allotment of scholarships available.
And again Yared developed nicely from high school champ to ncaa champ to Olympian, but he was not a 4:20/9:30 high school runner.
