This is very standard marathon training. It's good to do 1-2 of these depletion runs because it causes your body to adapt to prevent that depletion again in the future.
I remember Kim Conley doing similar things, fasted long runs and all that. But you also hear of athletes not doing it and doing well. Personally I don’t see the point other than mental, I guess.

There is no shade in Emilys post, just cringe humble bragging. Kara wrote a book about sports abuse, and emphasized how Jerry's group was the OPPOSITE of her bad experience with Salazar. So we can drop the dramatic accusations.
Emily is a good runner and I respect her longevity, but she strikes me as 13 going on 35. People who are comfortable in their own skin don't constantly post things on social media about "owning your story" or "not letting anyone tell you you can't do it", or body issue/body shaming content, etc. Could you imagine someone like Joan Benoit ever doing anything like this?
You could argue during her distance running heyday that she was a public figure, although imo that would be pushing it - elite running isn't exactly the NBA. But either way, at this point she seems pretty well retired from public life. Her public social media is almost exclusively about coaching at Oregon. She rarely posts her kids.
Whatever, I knew her long ago. Maybe you all have a point, maybe you don't, but these anonymous, slanderous, non specific accusations seem in poor taste.

Crap goes down in many running teams, from beer clubs through the NCAA and professional. People make mistakes and are human, personalities clash. Welcome to the real world, kiddos.
What Shalane has never done is dragged someone's name on the Internet (implicitly or explicitly), let alone for something that happened a decade ago.

Wouldn’t it be safer and easier to just practice fueling? Seems like a much better idea to me.
You should do both. You want to know you can handle the fuel, but also benefit from getting adaptations from being depleted. not something you should do every weekend but 1-2 in a marathon build help.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. It definitely feels like more former athletes are starting to open up or subtly allude to their negative experiences with BTC. For a long time, everything around that group seemed so tightly managed and polished, but now you’re seeing cracks where people are being more honest about what went on behind the scenes. It’s interesting because many of them achieved incredible results there, yet clearly something about the environment didn’t work long term for everyone.
