I’m curious if “food noise” existed 30-40 years ago. Because people (namely Americans) were on average pretty skinny back then.
Food simply wasn’t as pervasive and it was not normal to dine as a form of entertainment. When I grew up in the 1980s, going to restaurants was for rich people and something normal folks did only a couple times per year. Dinners were simple and functional, eg pizza, tacos, pasta…anything you could get on the table in 30 minutes or fewer. A lot of it, frankly, was unappetizing. In my household, snacking was permitted but only at specific times (eg. right after returning from school and not within 2 hours of dinner) and only in small portions. Dessert bowls for ice cream were small..much smaller than the bowls people use now. In general, eating was simply a task of daily living, not something to obsess over. At present, the obsessive attention to food—whether it is tasty enough, good enough, etc—has raised the salience of it in our minds, making it hard to keep the brain from ruminating about food.
