Had the pleasure of listening to him speak and meet him a couple of times. Both times he was invited to speak to a very small group. He was entertaining, thoughtful, gracious, and very generous with his time. He asked everyone about their training & race plans and autographed every book.
If this was a thread about db Brosnan, the mods would be watching this thread like hawks. Same as if one of brojos coach friends was screwing one of their athletes (again). But they let the weirdos positively ravage jtupper's memory on the day he died. SHAME!
Sad to read :( I started running 11 years ago 35 minute 5K and his book helped me get down to 16:21. I would always do my v02max and threshold workouts at his prescribed paces. It was before all the YouTube and Strava pro videos shared training.

I honestly think he deserves a black page. Not only is he the most influential running coach (at least for hobby joggers like me), but he also contributed a lot to this board. He will be missed.
I don't think he posted here after about 2011 at the latest, but those of us who were here during roughly the years 2003-2011 remember a time when this board was amazing. Daniels would routinely answer poster's questions regarding all aspects of running. I never met him but read his books and interacted with him here. 100% class act. Never criticized any posters, even the trolls. Sadly, there were cowardly trolls who liked to anonymously talk $hit to him here and try to act tough and eventually drove him away. What 80-yo man wants to put up with the crap we see here daily? So he moved on and the board has just deteriorated since.
He's probably got God on a treadmill right now doing a VO2max test.

I remember being pretty stoked that jtupper was posting here. Pre social media, these boards were pertty civilized and a lot of great information was shared.
Same here. I have never had a running coach in my life.
His Running Formula was the most important book I have read about running. It taught me how to build training plans and how to be my own coach.
I l've literally had it sitting on my coffee table or next to my laptop 95% of the time for almost 20 years.
I pulled it off of the shelf last week. I'm helping a newbie train for a marathon and pulled it out to see look at the VDOT chart. It will always be a great resource.
