My first two years of HS fall of 2005 -> Spring 2007 I lived in upstate NY and had no idea how to train but ran some ok times (9:38 3200 soph year). Moved to Texas as a junior because my dad was transferred to a new base (army) and we reached out to the XC coach that my goal was to run at the D1 level. He was the soccer coach first and XC coach second but after our call he purchased and dedicated himself to Daniels Running Formula and had us all do a 9min TT in summer training and wheeled our distance and gave us a predicted VO2 max and VDOT plus printed the chart for us to know all our workout paces. Ended up top 10 at NXN and running for Michigan two years later.
going into my senior year of college, I spent 6 weeks training in flagstaff because my sis was going to school at NAU. I ran into Janet Bawcom at Buffalo Park and her husband asked if I could pace her for a workout the next morning. I did and she invited me to breakfast with her coach after. That’s how I found myself sharing a meal with Jack Daniels at the peak of my running career. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, he was so kind and just thrilled to talk to anybody with a passion for the sport. He will be missed and his influence will continue to live on in the sport.
