Well first of all, good username!
Yes ofc that it’s different to be a coach and a parent, but what I saw in Pfungstadt were just kids being very grateful to Gjert!
Yet, if he would be agressive or just control their life’s they would be a bit different I would say, we can see trough social media that they do what they want.
This actually looks like a “normal” training group, where they care for each other and are friends.
Take for example the Spanish guys that run the Pfungstadt meet, they all are very close and they look like true friends, TagarroTeam on Instagram. I can see the same vibe on the Vikings, or maybe that’s just me, an outsider.
I spoke with Spanish athletes I said before after the race and they said that Jose was a very strong athlete and that Gjert is changing his life and he will be forever grateful to him, before training with Gjert he was smashing sessions everyday because of lack of self esteem or even just bad planning. Found his Strava account after and it was true, now he has the account private but you can still see the older sessions he used to do. (Saw for example this kid doing 2x(6x200) with 30”/3’ recovery to an average of 25.7 if I’m not wrong or for example 1000 + 800 + 600 + 200 (12 minutes recovery and 4 minutes for the 200) for 2:23 / 1:50 / 1:21 / 25 , it amazes me how he only had 1:46 and 3:37)
Probably he is a athlete that just needed a good setup and now that he got one he is going to grab it like it’s the last shot. Also from what I read on the internet, Jose is on his 4th coach? Susana Silva, Vicente Modahl, Joao Abrantes and now Gjert, I bet that if he doesn’t “like” the way Gjert is he will get another coach!
We will for sure see more of him.
maybe it’s just me thinking loud but it almost looks like this kid likes Gjert more than his kids actually liked him.
