3:43.13 has been waiting to be broken since it was set, but everyone who could have done it (El G, Lagat, Nyeng) either got slower or retired.
3:26.00 is equivalent to WAY faster than 3:43.13. Even with the simple minded multiply by 1.08 thing it's a 3:42.2. And I don't agree that 109.3 meters takes 16.2 seconds, tacked on to a race paced at less than 14 second per 100m pace. It's really worth a 3:41 high.
All imperial distances are run far less frequently, so of course they lag behind. And that's why it's a bad sign these current crop of top 1500 elites keep going imperial (or off-distance metric) for their record hunts. They can't beat 3:26.00 and they all know it.
The 1.08 conversion includes the effect of the additional 109 meters on overall pace. Your belief that it’s that it’s just an extension from the 1500m, is inaccurate. If someone ran 3:26 and kept on going, it would be painful to watch. The current ratio between the WRs is 1.083 so the mile WR is slightly inferior. Lowering the mile WR to 1.08, would result in 3:42.5.
don't twist my words around. I said it wouldn't take 16.2 seconds, off a sub 14 second 100m pace.
I may have miscalculated 206 x 1.08, but it wouldn't take 16.5 seconds either. That's exactly 15 second pace! Imagine that happening mid-race instead of at the end, and maybe you'll understand. Slow things down to 15 second pace at 800 meters, and El G types will thank you for the restful jog.
1.08 is a bro science conversion with no relevance to equivalent fitness.
