Fast 400/800 guys cant just increase mileage and become better at endurance events. The same thing that makes them respond well to sprint training makes them respond poorly to true endurance training.
Steve Ovett was a good 400/800 man as a youngster and like you say this type of runner never reaches next level at the mile + distances.
